Win7 - Broken welcome screen

Usually the welcome screen displays a picture for each user to login, and you simply click to login.
For some reason, mine has screwed up and now only has two icons, one for the last user logged in, and then "Other User" which requires you to type the username and password for the user manually.

This happened at the same time that one of the users managed to randomly break, apparently it wouldnt login (was taking 5mins) so they hard reset the computer. On startup, they say there was a bunch of numbers, and they were presented with this broken login screen. When they logged in again, they were presented with a black desktop with everything gone, and the error message that C:\Windows\system32\config\desktop wasn't accessible and that the default profile had been loaded.

I fixed this by backing up their files, deleting the old user and making a new one.
But i cant fix the login screen.

Any ideas?

 

This may not be of any use, but try booting to the Win7 install disc and using either the Startup Repair option (probably won't help) or the System Restore option (probably too late since you already deleted the user and created a new one). I too use Win7, and have not had a single issue with it. IMO it's the best OS that Microsoft has released, EVER, and I've used 'em all since Win3.0/3.1/3.11. Yeah- who cares, right? LOL I'll try to research this when I get some free time in the next 2-3 days, but in the meantime, hopefully someone will come along with some real help other than my useless crapola. Good luck!
