The desktop with no apps open the monitor acts normal. If I open any app like Outlook, etc. The monitor randomly blinks on and off at a random rate of about once every 5 or 10 seconds. I have checked everything I know to check there are no entries in any of the event logs. None of the connectors are loose. I have worked on it for about two days on and off and can find nothing. I also Googled it with no success.

This began when I put Win7 in hibernate and tried to wake it up. It came up strangely saying that it could not recover from hibernate. I then restarted it and since then it gives me this condition.

    Anyone every seen this condition?

    Thanks..........

    Greetings, zepherz...

Any flags in Device Manager? Have you tried reinstalling the graphics drivers (doesn't look like that's your problem, but you never know)?

Do you get the same symptoms when booted into Safe Mode? Have you tried rolling back to a restore point prior to the start of the symptoms?

And - have you tried another monitor?

In addition to Caliban's suggestion , do you change any hardware component from your machine ? You should post your computer's specification , download this tool

    http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html

    follow the process :
    from left column choose
Summary ( wait 30 seconds until report generated )
    from bar menu select :
    File
    Save as Text file
    choose desktop as saving location
follow this process to post your machine type report

Okay thanks folks I have lots to work on here. I have looked at both the device manager and event viewer and found nothing suspicious. I will check on the safe mode now and re-installing the video driver. I thought of running a repair on the Win7 system disc but have not really had much success with that mostly for startup problems I think.

Anyway I will be busy trying these things you all have shared with me.

Thanks much I will keep you informed as to my progress.

Sounds good. If you get a chance, grab that Speccy program, give us some idea of what we're working with...keep us informed, and good luck!

Okay got it fixed! I was following the list of suggestions that you gave me and your first suggestion showed me how to fix it. It had a bad video board.
I went to the device manager and and as soon as I opened the Video board device window the monitor started flashing so hard I could not shut it off. So based on that I tried the video board since I had one on hand that would work and that was the problem.

Thanks for that and thanks to all of the folks that gave me so many helpful suggestions that I had not thought of.

    You guys/gals are the greatest!!
