Title: Win7 x64 256GB SSD Error Message: The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable

Refer to Malware Forum postings with activities to analyze logs to determine if Malware could have been the root cause.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=273457&highlight=krmorgan
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1805037

Here are some visual aids to display the errors as they are being displayed on my computer:

    1) Program CCleaner
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/834/ccleaner64execorruptfil.jpg/

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/248/thefileordirectoryiscor.jpg/

    2) Program Intuit TurboTax 2011
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/254/intuitupdaterexecorrupt.jpg/

When I navigate to C:\Windows\assembly and sort either by Assembly Name or Version I cannot locate "NativeImages" or "v4.0.30319_32" ... so I do not understand what the error message is even referring to?

Since these errors are not "fatal errors" in preventing the program from functioning, can these events with "warnings with a Yellow Triangle" even be fixed - and do they even need to be fixed? I have been informed a SSD has no FAT or swap logic similar to a physical drive. I have not been able to fix these errors using Chkdsk and I cannot seem to defrag the registry errors detected in System Mechanic Professional as this program typically would display the DOS commands at start up before logging into my Windows profile.

    3) System Mechanic Professional Registry Defragmentation and Compacting is not functioning after Restarting
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/systemmechanicproregist.jpg/

I am using the following research as a guideline, but I am concerned that it may be for a physical drive as opposed to Solid State Disk.

Windows can't check the disk while it's in use
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/sinuse.jpg/

NOTE: I will have to post the results of this after submitting this post as I have "schedule disk check" . I have done this activity recently before but not captured the results (not sure if it's even doing anything because this ordinarily runs after rebooting the computer but before logging into my Win7 profile). I'm am not sure since one of the two Malware forum posts are still OPEN and I have not restored some of the settings back to original user configurations whether this could impact the results?

Here are my computer system details in case it at all matters in applying the solutions:

    3443CTO ThinkPad X1
Processor 2.30 gigahertz Intel Core i5-3427U
Operating system Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
    Total memory 8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3L
Hard drive 256GB Solid State Drive SATA3

Thank you in advance for your your assistance! Kevin

    Quick Reply:

(Here are the results as I cannot figure out how to get the file system checked as the system is cancelling it)
    Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    volume label is windows7_OS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency, you
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
    that you continue.
    Disk checking has been cancelled.

This isn't a business, so techs do not get assigned. It probably just passed under the radar.

Until chkdsk runs we won't know the problem.

    Try this:

    chkdsk /t:0

If that doesn't work, boot to the Windows 7 DVD and use the command prompt tools from there.

Knee-jerk response as to what the problem probably is?

    A failing SSD.

    A 256GB SSD and you're running a Registry defragmenter?!

    What SSD make/model/firmware# is it?

    Adrynalyne,

Thank you for your quick reply as it appears as if I now have a trio involved on this triage as a couple of other Techs have jumped in ;)

I conducted some research on your proposed solution of chkdsk /t:0 as I was have difficulties getting the system to accept this command. After skimming through the following microsoft forum I came across the solution that was able to get check disk to run!!!!!!!

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/d78e4aaf-e506-43d1-bb01-89216bfba24b/

The below focuses in on the blog that had the workable solution:
"I experienced this problem today, and it was very frustrating because I normally have GUI boot off, and apparently chkdsk loads after and uses the GUI, even though it's text-only. So...it tries to run, but you don't know that it does. And it cancels one second into the 10 second countdown as others have indicated.

Brian's post is largely on track with what I did. But I don't think the t:0 is an option of chkdsk itself.

First thing to check msconfig. Go to the boot tab and make sure that "no GUI boot" (or something similar to that) is NOT checked! Save but do not reboot yet.

Next go to a command prompt. Do not paste the pound sign or anything after in the line. Note that there are 3 programs being run

chkntfs /d #this resets the chkdsk and autochk settings to default

chkntfs /t:0 #this sets the timer to 0 seconds...so things will run before they can be cancelled. You MIGHT be able to get away with /t:1, which would allow you to manually cancel, but I doubt that would work.

chkntfs /c C: #tells it what drive to check

chkdsk /r #implies /f. basically look for and fix everything

fsutil dirty set c: #forces a check on the disk at the next boot. Probably not needed if you are running a scandisk because your computer thinks it might have a problem.

now you're FINALLY ready to reboot. And scandisk should work. Hooray. You'll probably not be able to disable it on-demand though (in case you have a presentation in 3 minutes that you need your laptop up for, disk errors or not... So, after you're all done you may wish to set the countdown timer [chkntfs] to 2 or 10.)

My suspicion is that my HP laptop has the function key toggled on, unless you cancel it...this is probably sending a keypress to the checking utility. (I can't just hit F1 to get help, I need to press Fn+F1). Either that or my thumbscanner is sending a connection signal which is being interpreted as a keypress.

Proposed As Answer by isepiq Thursday, November 08, 2012 9:29 AM "

I followed the above steps to reset check disk to default, then set timer to 0, instruct to check C: drive to look for and fix everything by doing a "dirty" scan.

I am including some photos I took while check disk was executing.

Windows has finished checking your disk.

I am attaching the check disk log file results (Event ID 1001.txt) for analysis and feedback on what the next steps should be? Thank you as hopefully this is not a failing SSD as I just bought this computer in November. Lenovo also does not supply the original Win7 DVD, Lenovo has just supplied the recovery disks. It wasn't until this point able to run the recovery disks until check disk was able run to completion.

Your confusing the issue from check disk to defrag as I've really not said anything other than the system had detected fragmented files. Your other recommended solution doesn't have to be implemented as check disk does not run every time and when it did run, it was cancelled up until I came up with a solution to run it as "dirty".

No one has offered any solutions yet, we're trying to do the basics first, like get some details and logs. No point in throwing out random 'fixes' at it until we have a handle on what has gone wrong.

SSDs and registry defragmenters = snake oil, not going to improve the speed of an SSD in any meaningful way. Same for removing malware traces, they're as likely to do more long-term damage as they are to 'repair' anything.

Please minimize your use of color in posts, I find it very hard to read. Also post your screenshots/jpegs in the post, again, it helps us.

Please run MSInfo32, wait for it to fully load the last sub-section (Windows Error Reporting) then Save and zip it, attach the zip please.

It's looking like a wipe/reinstall (without the 3rd party snake oil) may be the best way forward.

Hi, I have attached MSInfo32.zip for review ...

Did you see the check disk log labeled "Event ID 1001.txt" posted in my previous reply to Adrynalyne?

I don't believe executing check disk successfully was by any means a "random fix" as the system had originally detected " - Corrupt File ... is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility".

If it's any consolation, no Windows Error Reporting has been logged for almost two weeks since March 8th. Your going to have to convince me a wipe/reinstall needs to be done contrary to applying Murphy's Law "if it's not broken, don't fix it". At this point in time, I haven't seen any system performance or functional errors so I just need to ascertain whether the check disk utility fixed the original warning (not fatal) error messages from Jan/Feb.

hello krmorgan, just chiming in, as i have just experienced the very same issue (with a [brand new] intel ssd drive); i managed to boot using a different drive, and then checkdisk the ssd drive, fix the errors and get back up and running. i am still baffled as to what the cause might (may) have been (will be?). slight OC'ing? underpowering, as someone mentioned? it is indeed quite frustrating, even though i keep backups of all my drives on an external drive.

Yes my Thinkpad X1 Carbon has been fine ever since following the advice in the Microsoft Forum.

I'm sure the Win7 system OS isn't perfect as third party software may be a contributing factor. I don't have the time to make this a career in trouble shooting any further or rebuilding. I have had one blue screen but it's stable enough to be a lot more reliable than the 2006 XP Thinkpad it replaced!

    Best wishes.
