Does anybody out there know where on-line I can find a good back up program for Windows 98? I want to back up some folders with my projects from a USB drive to a zip disk or other medium at will.

If that system doesn't currently have USB drive software then you need to install. You can find all the answers with a simple internet search for 'USB Drive on Win98' but here is an example:
    http://www.liutilities.com/how-to/install-a-usb-flash-drive-on-windows-98/
For fairly simple issues like this on a very old Win OS you should get into the habit of searching for yourself on line. It's mostly a lot quicker.
Come here when you simply can't find the information yourself first.

EDIT: I keep pasting a link above but it never shows on my screen after I post it. No idea what's causing that

The system already has USB drivers. I want to back up software from a USB drive to another drive. I looked on freewarefiles and saw one. It didn't work properly. I tried a search on download.cnet.com. I couldn't load the second page of results. That's why I'm asking here.

With '98 you can 'copy' and 'paste' to the other drive. No compression, but you'll have another copy. I often copy whole usb's to a folder named after the contents I want saved, before I use the usb for another purpose.

A good link for 98 stuff

yup, i would agree, just copy and paste. it will get the job done.
if you actually want a backup program for win98, let me know...
i'm a rat pack and i've been squirreling away programs since the win95 days.
so i could find some backup programs designed for win95/98.
    anyway, good luck with it.

I thank you for your information, but I want compression. Maybe I can use 7-Zip for compression. BTW, can I get Win98 to pass long filenames to a batch file? I use a batch file to back up to my Win10/64 laptop's hard drive. :)

You can compress the files first before moving them.

    I don't understand. :(

You want to backup data but you want it compressed before you back it up? Is that what you mean? Then compress them, then save them on another media.

No, I want the files compressed during backup. In other words, the original files remain uncompressed, but the backups are compressed.

Well good luck finding any program that can do that that works on Win98. That's why you need to be searching the internet for that yourself. The chances of finding anyone on here with that kind of knowledge of Win98 is slim.
The other logical answer is to back up the data, and then compress it on the external device.

I'll look again. Maybe download.cnet.com will work now. (?)

It's always worked for me so no idea what problems you have had with it. What has that got to do with back up software that works on Win98 that compresses the files on the receiving media?

I was looking there for a decent backup program. I tried several locations, even Google, and still can't find exactly what I need. I want to back up some of the contents of a USB drive to a ZIP drive or another USB drive. I want it on-demand, occasionally and unscheduled. I'll continue looking.

To get help here you will need to read answers carefully and try not to post in riddles.
I wish you the best finding that back up software, if it exists.

WinRAR v2.00 should do what you want. WinRAR has never been free though so I'm not sure how you will get on acquiring a licence.

If I haven't already said so, on my Win10/64 laptop, I use a batch file to run 7-Zip to compress folders from a USB drive to a folder on the hard drive. However, it requires parsing the path I feed it to compress the folder to an archive with the same name as the source in a different folder and to accept part of a destination from the user, i.e. a category as a subfolder from the folder that contains the back-ups. Now, I can't do these batch processes on Win98. That's what I want: an easy way to back up information on request (i.e. with one click and a few selections) with little setup.

You know what? I was going to copy the back-ups from my Win10/64 laptop to the Win98 computer where I wanted the back-ups through a USB drive. That's all. I just wanted the easy way to do things. :)

ok, well, if you have no luck elsewhere,
here are 3 backup programs that said they are win98 compatible and do compression while backing up.
    http://hallsted.ws/misc/2017/backup-w98/abakt_backup_program.zip 1.1MB
    http://hallsted.ws/misc/2017/backup-w98/shackup_backup.zip 274KB
    http://hallsted.ws/misc/2017/backup-w98/syncback_v32.zip 6.4MB
this version of syncback is stated as win98 compatible and is the only backup program i have used for ages.
try them and see if you like them.
    good luck with it.
oh... and when i have saved programs, i have also saved the relevant pages of the website,
so there is more than just the program in the download zip file.

I thank you for your suggestions. Now, I can't try them out right now, as my Win98 computer is at my mother's house, and I left there yesterday morning. :(
