    Hi,

sor I had to defrag my harddrive by using the standard program that comes with Win98, alas it screwed up my entire OS and Win wouldn't load anymore.
Bummer I thought and started the reinstallation of Win98 (only fullversion SW I have on hand). But all of a sudden I run into a strange error.

After the first boot when several software gets installed (PCI, USB, display and other adaptors) the computer stops before starting the GUI with error

"While initializing device SHELL canoot find or load KRNL386.exe - file not found"

I retraced the installation several times until I found out that as soon as the

"standard dual PCI IDE controller" is installed and a nesseary has to be made, afterwards the error pops up on the screen and won't get to the Win98 desktop.

I am able to get into safemode, when using the device manager removing the PCI IDE Controller I have no problem starting Win98

But....due to this controller missing I can't access my CD rom drive ....

Any ideas ? Is there alternate versions for the MSHDC.INF file out there that may solve my problem ? This inf file is found when doing the installation process for the above listed controller

Using Win98 1st edition, Pentium IV HP pavillion, 40GB Harddrive (partitioned - 2 GB for OS, rest for data, progs)
