    Hi,

    I have

    Compaq Presario 7480
    AMD K6-2 550 mhz
    Ram 183 SDRAM
    3X IDE HDs 2X20GB and 1X30GB
    Win98SE

I have a PCI net card (Netgear FA 311/321) installed, it is attached to my home LAN and is good for backing up data from my XP machine as well as surfing the net and simple tasks etc.

Recently I installed another PCI network adapter (Netgear GA302T) together with the original and suddenly neither card works on the LAN and both Firefox and IE crash when opened, or freeze the whole computer.

I updated drivers for both adapters (after uninstalling both) but still with the problem.

I have uninstalled the new adapter but this didn't fix the prob. either

I tried uninstalling both cards and reinstalled the original card only (including physically removing the newer card).

    Still with the problem

Any ideas about where to from here?

    Thanks in advance

    Dins

just curious, trying ti picture this. Why do you want to install 2 ethernet cards to the same pc?? If i understand you right then the two cards are probably conflicting with each other's tco/ip settings somehow. Each card on an LAN would of course require their own local, private ip address i would think. The fact that it would work now with the original card installed is strange as well. May be you can give me a little more info. I would go into "view network connections" and see how many connections has been established also.

One to connect to the internet and one to connect to the other PC seems most likely (which is exactly what I have in my W98SE PC).

@_dinsdale_ You may need to re-install the TCP/IP drivers for both cards by completely removing the original version first and then starting from scratch or possibly you may need to re-install winsock.

Thanks both of you for taking the time to consider my problem.

One card to my router and the second to another computer... kinda using this computer as a switch. Also the second card (which will connect computer to computer) gives me a faster connection than my LAN.

Definitely no IP conflict as I have given them both static addresses to ensure this problem wouldn't arise... besides removing one of the cards which would solve this problem, it DIDN'T solve the problem.

I have uninstalled both and reinstalled from scratch using the manufacturer's most up to date drivers BUT is this different from "TCP/IP drivers"?

Also, how would I go about reinstalling winsock?

Thanks again for your help so far.

You could always try useing a router or switch. Not saying it is impossible to run two cards but i would think that a router might make more sense but i'm sure you will figure it out. A router will help the traffic flow back and forth from each pc. Each adapter will have it's own ip address in relation to the pc.

What I really meant (but didn't say very well was you should go to Network places>Network connections>Right click to get properties then uninstall the internet protocol and then rebbot and then go back and re-install it.

As for the winsock fix you can use this :)

OK thanks. After so many restarts my power supply has died so will take me a few days to get back to this.
