Hi! I have a Win98 computer which is set up for multiple users, and none have a password. Now, I want the users to be able to choose their names rather than type them in. How do I do that?

I don't know if Win98 has it but, in XP or later, you can click on the Start Button and select Switch User.

Yes, but I'm taking about logging on.

    Control Panel > Users
You can simply do what those settings offer you.

Okay. I looked there. I need to remove old, repetitive user names, but I'll do that another time. I did not see the setting I want. I want to change the style of the log on screen. Users just sets individual user's settings. :(

You'll need help from an experienced user of Win98 who either still uses it or remembers those settings.

Don't count me as an experienced user. It has been over a decade since any 98 computer was in the house. But I do have a library of books.

What you want to do is not possible in Windows 98.

Steps are given for setting up multiple users.
Enter a user name and password in the next two dialog boxes. You don't have to enter a password for a given user. No password just means it is easier to log on as that user; it doesn't get rid of the logon box because you have enabled user profiles.

If you choose to use the same desktop for all users, any changes you make to the current user in the registry and any changes you make on the desktop or in the Start menu will apply to all users.

Once you set up one additional user, clicking the Users icon in the Control Panel displays the User setting dialog box....Of course any user can change his or her own settings or those of any other user. Only by implementing user policies can you restrict users from altering these setting.

After reading the above, it seems there is not much benefit to creating multiple users. Have one user with an automatic logon and be done with it.

You misunderstood. Right now, Iwhen I log on, I type in the user name. I want to select the user name. BTW, I am using multiple profiles so that each user has unique icons and settings.

You want something that has only existed in later Windows versions. Win98 was never designed for multiple users in the same way later versions were. So you'll probably just have to remember your user name, as will anyone else.
If what you really want is to be able to sign in to any user account of your choice, then if you know all the names you can, if you don't you can't.
There is no other reason I can think of as to why you would want the usernames to appear before choosing which one to log on to.
As much as Win98 had a huge fan base, it is now very much a relic.

I haven't used 98 in at least 10 years so I'm no expert. I do have reference books though.

I guess I have to deal with good enough. :( I remember the user names. I just wanted to be able to select the user name. Thanks, anyway. :)
