I am having a problem with a Win98SE computer with Symantec AV version 9.0.5.1100. When you try to shut down, the computer will look like it's going through the shutdown process, but will just sit with the desktop showing (no icons or start bar). I know it's SAV causing the issue because when I uninstalled it the computer shuts down with no problem. I've tried what Symantec suggested in disabling auto-protect and updating the program and files but that did not work either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next? Thank you!

If it were me....I would ditch 98 and symantec, then install xp sp2 and one of our recommended freeware firewalls, but that doesn't help solve your problem!
(and depends on your system specs)

Try turning off norton internet security before shutting down.

    Regards..

    Hi elmckernan,
Is your installation of the SAV 9.0.5.1100 new for you? Or have you been using it successfully prior to this?

I can't upgrade to XP and can't switch to another antivirus because this computer is on a school network. All kinds of standards and politics are in play. I have no choice but to try and make this work (or go crazy trying)!

Also, it doesn't have NIS, just SAV but it has to be totally uninstalled for the computer to shutdown properly, not just disabled.

Abri - we have this version of SAV installed on other computers that are shutting down successfully. They are the same make/model too.

Thanks for the website. I've tried everything in that article and then some, however still no shutdown. There is obviously something else that Symantec loads that is preventing shutdown, as just disabling auto-protect still leads to shutdown problems. The only fix has been totally uninstalling Symantec AV, and I can't have a PC without AV!

I assume, you have all the windows updates for win98?

    Is this the corporate version?

    Hi elmckernan!
I was wondering if you're bound to using this particular version of Nortons. If the computer works without it, and if keeping it on the computer is causing a situation which could lead to corruption of files by continuous forced shutdown, perhaps you could try one of the AV's recommended under point 2 here:

I use AVG free and have been very happy with it. I know a lot of people here like Avast. I haven't worked with Win98 for a long time so I can't tell you how they'd compare with Nortons for you.

If your computer works better with one of these other softwares, it might be possible to justify to the school that the computer requires an AV and the one you have is threatening to damage an otherwise working computer.

oh, and another thought, but it would be good to verify it with someone who has more experience: I wondered if running Registry Mechanic might be useful. Since the problem goes away when you remove the AV, it sounds like a compatibility problem. I fought with one between Kaspersky and Sygate for several weeks before finally giving up and looking for different options. However, if you're bound to the Symantec software by school policy and it is successfully running on the other computers, maybe Registry Mechanic could identify a corrupted file that is behind the problem. I'm very cautious about changing even damaged files in the registry if my computer is working, that's why I recommend that you ask for a second opinion in this case. You can link to the download site for Registry Mechanic through Major Geeks at:

    Hope you find a solution!

Abri - yes, we are bound to use Symantec as our AV, and can't install something like AVG. It is Win98SE with all updates installed (did that before Symantec was installed). I found another couple websites that have other possible solutions to the shutdown issue that I'll try... otherwise we are going to have to upgrade to XP!
