Have installed the buslink 3 in 1 driver for win 98. Plugged in the buslink external USB hard drive, widows finds new hardware and installs same. However no drive icon appears in my computer allowind me to access the drive. Anyone have a solution to this problem. Buslink doesn,t seem to care as they do not reply. The usb ports work as I can use my PNY flash drive.

If the hd is large, it may be over the size limit the 98SE can "see". Someone a lot more knowledgeable than me will know what the size limitation is for 98.
(I know it is at least 80 because I had a 98SE computer that sees my external 80GB hd).

Open up Device Manager. Does the drive show up there, probably under USB section? Right click, select properties, can you discover anything else?

okay- the 3in1 drivers for the buslink are installed. There is a usb-ide controller adapter in SCSI and there is a usb-ide bridge under USB. The software is installed. Now the question is why doesn't win98se show an icon or drive letter for the hard drive?

Its probable that the drive is 'hiding' behind another (?CD) in the drive letter assignment race.

In device manager slect the cd and properties

move the drive letter down the alphabet by choosing new first and last letters.

Do the same for other devices you might have.

My thanks to all who tried to help solve my problem. Your repliies led me to the answer. There was a new hard drive listed , but was a Hitachi number. By disconnecting the USB connection I assumed it was the Buslink external drive. I then remembered that win98 only recognized fat and fat 32 file formats. My buslink was formatted NTFS so I reformatted it fat32 and all is working fine. The buslink was set up by me as an X drive and everything is cool. Thank you all. I hope my solution is the answer to others who have the same or similar problem. Happy New Year All!!
