Hi! I recently got a new Win98SE minitower at my mother's house, and it works great. Its two main problems are that it's way too good for my purposes and that I haven't been able to get a full DOS memory setup in Windows mode. Regarding the former, I wanted it mainly to experiment with file compression, but its hard drive at 127GB total disk space is way too good for compression, but I still use a lot of floppies and Zip disks with it from an old Win98SE minitower that had a hard drive that was just too large to compress and a lot of floppies and Zip disks to compensate, so I can still do it. I installed EMM386 on the computer and could only get 31k UMB memory, and that was only available because I defined "i=b000-b7ff" on its entry in config.sys. I was wondering where all the memory was. Under somebody else's suggestion, I looked at QEMM's MANIFEST program--I also had QEMM on the computer at the time--and found 64k of memory at E000-EFFF that was unused. I included it on EMM386's command line, and the computer stopped booting after EMM386 ran. I tried Verbose mode, and the line that said it was active appeared before it stopped. I decreased the size of this area of memory, but, during bootup, Windows started displaying an Out of Memory error. I then tried using QEMM and JEMM, and they both give me a fatal exception upon startup of Windows. I can simply switch to DOS mode for my DOS software, but I'd rather run some software in Windows mode where possible.

BTW, if it helps, I'm not at my mother's house right now, but I determined that the computer had a Pentium 4 microprocessor and 1GB of RAM.

While I am not sure, but I think with 98 and 1 gig of ram is your issue. Use 512mb or less and if I am right it should work. There are patches that can be applied for more then 512mb of ram, not sure if those address issue within Dos.
