Well, I've done it this time. Somehow my Win98SE has died on my laptop, a Dell Latitude 500Mhz. It powers up with a IEXPLORER error, stays blank screen (not blue screen but windows background blue), and does the chimes, then comes up with the error message, and stays blank after clearing the error message. It did this after a scan disk and defrag, which appeared to go normally.

Is there any recovering this without a complete OS install?

OK, I was able to fix it this time with the assistance of a reference book I had. I went to DOS, which was still working and ran SCANREG.EXE, and pulled up an old backup. That did the trick.
