Win98SE Standby Freeze

I have an old PIII 500 mhz system, 320 mb ram, Win98SE...

For the last 6 months or so I've had the Power Management set to "Always On", but yesterday I changed the setting back to "Home/Office Desk". The system freezes coming out of standby, leaving me at a black screen with a cursor flashing in the upper left (no prompt, and cant type anything). I have to turn off the power and reboot to recover.

Standby was working fine when I changed to "Always On"... Any ideas where to start??

If you change it back to what it was before you had the problem, does the problem stop? Your psu might be dying or might need replacing!

Can we have you specs?

 

Specs: PIII 500 mhz, 320 mb ram, Win98SE, 10 & 40 gig hard drives, Radeon 7000 vid card... what more do you need?

System runs fine except for freezing coming out of standby, warm and cold starts are no problem.

Yep, when I change back to "Always On" the problem goes away because the system never goes into standby.

 

Not sure if it is the case here, but I know some Win98 systems would end up writing the "Ok they're back at the computer everything spin up" code to the page file instead of leaving it in RAM, so once the hard drive stops because of stand-by it can't access the code to start the hard drive spinning again. that's a real basic way of describing it, it happened all the time on my old 98 system so I don't use standby.

 

That's fine, just one more thing - what wattage is your psu?
