I'm dusting off a very old laptop in good condition that has no virus protection. had to beat AVG 7.5 out of the system, it was totally non functional.

Are there any free virus scanners out there that still support this old OS?

I use ClamWin in a 98SE VM. Can't vouch for how effective it is as I hardly ever run 98SE these days, and I'm a safe browser anyway.

I'm unable to find what version of windows AVG supports. I think v 7 something supported 98 but I'm fairly certain definitions for that are no longer being updated.

my parents were on win98se until jan of this year. eset nod32 was on their computer.
before i renewed their subscription in the middle of 2010, i emailed support and asked about win98se support. support said to go through and buy the normal eset nod32, and get a hold of support afterwards, and they would send me a link to download nod32 for win98... and they did. you would have to check with them again, to see if they still support win98, since there is no mention of that on their website... but i was happy to have that on my parents' computer through jan 2011.

    toodles,

bigbazza, it is pointless to run an old version of an antivirus because the definition database is not updated. So you have a program running that is not protecting the computer.
