Wind 8-8.1 probs!

I have encountered no end of probs with the upgrade from Win 8-8.1, this started with IE not accepting cookies even when all settings set to accept all. Upon contacting MS, I had a couple of lengthy remote desktop sessions with one of their far east based bods, this involved removing all my supplementary security Spybot/CCleaner/Malwarebytes etc to see if any conflicts, none found. After running Tweaking software, an alternative user profile was created which seemed to cure the IE cookie issue, but still couldn't scan from scanner (this was an issue from outset).

Upon starting a new session the next day, IE wouldn't load at all, the PC settings on the right hand scroll bar wouldn't load - saying probs with IE, also MS update now fails. Although I created a restore point before the 8-8.1 upgrade, this disappeared as 8.1 is new operating system!

The pc is Win 7 pre-loaded on Acer with no orig discs to do fresh install.

Any ideas would be appreciated..?:confused

Thanks Nick, I'll try that, yr right about win 8, with the demise of XP in April 14 what choice do you have, a Mac - fine if you have £1000 to spare!!
