    Before upgrading to Windows XP, I recall having the abily to see Long File Names (not the trunced tilde ones) within DOS. It may have been the Norton Utilities I had installed, I do not now. However, upon upgrading, I can no longer see them. What I need them for is for PKZIP. The DOS version. I'm a dos man, grew up on dos, and resort to it all the time. When archiving my downloads, I use PKZIP for DOS. Version 2.5. When archiving said files, I would have the ability to zip files with more than 8 characters, and upon unzipping those files, would retain the original untrunced filename. Now, since upgrading, I can not do that anymore. When I unzip them, they are the whateve~.xxx file format.

    I need the ability to zip LFN's desperately, without having to use winzip or winrar (both exellent programs, but when archiving, I need to move fast and I can move faster in DOS). Can anyone help me with this? Is there a registry 'hack' or another program that will let me do this? When doing a 'dir' I used to display -

    longfi~1.com 4096 03/28/03 06:00pm long filename.com

    which of course showed me the untrunced version as well.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Sorry... I use Winzip and it keeps them for me...

    It may be an issue with Pkzip..

    I understand.. when I used it alot, I was much faster with PKZIP, but that was ummm 8 or 10 years ago...

    Winzip isn't bad. You can just right click on a folder or file and zip it from there..

    pkzip? ouch. time to move on to a 32 bit application. It's not going to work in XP like you want it to. Dos doesn't exist in XP. It's a command line now.

    If you really like command line then you might check out this WinZip addon:

    http://www.winzip.com/wzcline.htm

    It is good when doing batch processing of multiple zip files.

    I found the answer........

    and thought i'd post a reply, should anyone else need it.

    I didn't like WINZIP's commandline addition, but WINRAR did the job for me, and with speed too! It comes with the package with no need to download addition programs. It was in the WinRar installation directory, and simply called RAR.EXE (you can also you winrar.exe from the command line with parameters and it will load up the GUI interface and your file will be all done once it's loaded, but of course, doing multiples from dos can get annoying, so - back to the commandline)

    just simply add your winrar to your path and have at it. typically -

    path=(whatever you have now) ;c:\progra~1\winrar\;

    easy as that.

    So I'm good to go, thanks to myself and my reasearch! :) Hope it helps someone else in the future.
