im having the same problem as the "we apologize..." i got the same screen. ive been on HP customer chat for the last two hours with two differnt people who seem fairly incompetent. i managed to get into a PhoenixBIOS setup utility screen by holding down f10 when the saw the windows screen and i could get to a windows advanced options menu by holding f8 with these options:

    safe mode
    safe mode with networking
    safe mode with command prompt
    enable boot logging,
    nable vga mode
    last know good config
directory services restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
    debugging mode
disable auto restart on system failure
    start windows nromally
    boot
    return to OS choices menu

as with the "we apologize" screen none of the safe modes work [they bring me back to the "we apologize" and niether does last known congif of start windows normally.

hp-man is saying my three options are doing a non destructive system recovery, getting the recovery disks [which ive read mixed results about...], and the going to my HP center which is 100+ miles away.

from what ive read online the non destructive system recovery seems like the way to go. i dont care about the programs, if i lose those its fine. its my files im worried for. i know there is a risk to doing this recovery, but i've read a lot of people had no problem..

    pleas please please help...

since you can't access the recovery partition, you'll need the disk to start the recovery from the boot options(first link),I know that hp gives you a one time only chance to make a copy of the recovery partition"D" to disk,if you didn't make yourself a copy, then you'll have to buy them.
    sorry

Most HP and Compaq desktop PCs that ship with Windows Vista and XP do not come with recovery discs. Instead, they use a partition on the hard drive. Using a hard drive partition provides a convenient, more stable recovery solution. To access a hard drive recovery, turn on the computer and repeatedly press F10 (XP) or F11 (Vista) until a Recovery window opens.

Hi Mimom, excellent work! I had the same problem on a Compaq 5003 that ran XP and it kept doing the same thing: "we are sorry for the inconvenience, but windows did not load properly." No matter which one you selected, it would return to the "I'm sorry screen." The cd-rom was locked up. It only had 1 partition though. So, I just press F10 at the Compaq screen and inserted my xp cd. I went to the boot selection screen and switched the boot priority to cd-rom. Once I did this, the I saved my changes and started up. The cd-rom finally ran and I went through the XP set-up (blue screen). However, the problem didn't end here. First, I tried to repair the partition but, that didn't work. Second, I tried to just write over the partition but, that didn't work either. Both times, just landed me in the safe mode and back to the set up screen. So, I had no choice but, to delete the existing partition (it was the old one listed). Once, I did this. It worked fine. Again, excellent work Mimom. Genius, very genius.
