Improper shutdown caused by clumsy big feet (my own)tripping through cords while spring cleaning cause me to have a never ending startup repair loop. (I let it go for 4 days before I gave up all hope.)

I don't have a repair disk. I never made one because I thought that I could just download the iso from msn. (Only to discover that they inexplicably don't seem to offer that to people with preloaded oem software. )

So that left me with a broken pc and no recovery disk.
I was able to get to the command prompt. And I am currently running chkdsk /f /r d: and Its going slowly but its going. (2418 FILES CHECKED OUT OF 708864. At least I can see that something is happening, unlike the startup repair screen.)

Im sure that this is beginning of bad things so Im posting here and will post the scan results asap.

Im hoping to save the data on my hard drive. I thought about buying a recovery disk from amazon, but Im nervous that Ill run into the same issue with my Win7 key. Are there any other options for a recovery disk? (HP website listed no software for my pc.)

    Thanks!
    WR

:) thank you nick. I tried to grab the iso there, but it gives me the following message.

    Error
The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.

I did find this while searching but im not sure if it can be trusted.

There are HP OEM Restore/Recovery DVDs available here:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...M+dvd.TRS0&_nkw=HP+Windows+7+OEM+dvd&_sacat=0

Unfortunately, I don't know if YOUR OEM Key will activate Windows 7. You could still use the ISO you downloaded as per Nick T's link and purchase a Retail Product Key (the ISO you downloaded is a Retail version).

I installed Win 7 Ultimate (retail) on my laptop and got a retail Key for about $20US.

Just a quick update on my chkdsk. Its on 3 of 5 and 11% since yesterdays post.
I dont think its hung, so Im waiting it out.

About buying a disk and key. Its all so very confusing. I dont want to buy a key then end up with the same issue that my oem is giving me. So Ill continue to look into that today as well.

    Okay
So the chkdsk stayed stuck at 3/5 11%, I decided to try restarting my rig.
On restart I escaped the chkdsk feature and my pc booted up.
I don't seem to have lost any data.
I'll be running more checks (I havent tried to reboot it yet) and if all is well Ill be making a proper recovery disk or 10.

May I offer a suggestion? While it is working, please copy your data onto USB sticks or an external hard drive before doing any other tests, shutting down, rebooting or cleaning.

Thank you for suggesting that! I will copy everything to my external HD right now.
If did run sfc/scannow and recieved this message: Windows Resouce Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    Okay.
I tried to backup my files and could not do so.
    Uploading the error message .
Unsure of how to proceed now.

Have you looked at some random files in those folders and tried to open them to see if they show clearly?
If they do have you tried a simple 'copy to>..' pointing to the external drive?

    Hi :)
Yes Ive checked files and everything seems to be there and accessible to me. So Im backing up things using your suggested method. So far it seems to be working as desired.

    Thank you~

    Great!
I suspect there are inherent faults in Windows Back Up. Manually copying should work.

I backed things up by copying to my external. I held my breath and rebooted my pc.
PC wanted to check my C drive on restart and I let it. Four bad sectors were found. But it booted after the check completed. (Took about 5 minutes to do so)
After which I decided to try and back up my files using the Windows Backup again. Now it seems to be working as intended.

Are there any other checks that I should do now?

When Nick T posted in post #2 did you first use a free program to find out your Windows 7 Product Key?
It should be on a sticker somewhere on the system itself.
If you can't see such a sticker or it is not legible then use this program - ProduKey - to find out what it is. You MUST choose the correct version for your system 32 bit or 64 bit.
You can then choose to do a clean reinstall of Win 7 (it must be your exact original version ie, Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise) from the link given in post #2.

No, I used the product key that I found on the sticker on the side of the pc.
Im using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. Which isnt at all what I thought I was using.
I think that Im going to print out a set of specs so that I have them on hand for future reference. Since clearly my memory is not to be trusted! :)
Thank you all for your help!
I think we are all fixed now :)

Keep your eye on the bad sectors on the hard drive. If the number keeps going up, it means the hard drive is dying.

At least you were able to get the files off. (I've never used Windows backup). From day 1, my husband and I do not keep files on our computers. If it is important, we keep two copies off the computer on different storage media. I trained him that way because he was a college prof and if his computer went down, he could grab his files and use my computer. (Test, quizzes and grades all have deadlines and a non-functioning computer does not help to meet a deadline).

I also image our computers about once a month. If I need to replace a hard drive, I'd install the most recent image and then only need to do a few updates to get back to where the computer was.

How do I go about doing that for my pc exactly?
My initial thought was that I would make multiple copies of my recovery disk, on both disk and flash drive to have around just in case. But it seems that Im only allowed to go through the burn process once on my pc.

How best to monitor the bad sectors? Should I run chkdsk or something else?
    Thank you again!

You generally find that you can still make more than one copy of your recovery disc- it is brought to your attention as it is not to be used on another computer.
What I tend to do is copy the original, then store that away-use the copy , if necessary at any time, so that if it get damaged, I still have the original.
To make copies of your hard drive is different- You can use the backup to create an image of the present hard drive complete
    Sorry, I was in Windows 10- - windows 7

What brand of hard drive? Some brands have tools for monitoring.

Also, this doesn't work presently for Windows 7 and some versions of Office but you will be able to download a Windows 7 ISO by June 11th (currently it is broken - I check almost daily)
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_iso_download_tool.html

Then you can burn the ISO to a DVD or USB stick.

I've never used a USB stick. My recovery disks are burned to disks.
