I don’t know what the problem is which I have with Windows Defender.

When I try to access it I receive the error message below. I’ve also attached an image (Win Def is off.jpg) of this error message.

When I click on “Turn on and open Windows Defender” I get the error message below. Again, I attach an image (Error mssg.jpg).

Hi mark and welcome back! ;)

See the following link from the primary Microsoft Windows website: Turn Windows Defender on or off. The error that you mentioned is actually a very common error.

There is a pretty easy (possible) fix available here at the windowsclub.com where you will find FIX 0x800705b4 for Windows Defender.

Important Side Note: Pay no attention to the windowsclub.com part of that site that reads:
    Fix "Application Errors"
    PCHealthBoost.com/FreeDownload
(Recommend Tool for Windows) Easy Application Error Fix - 2 Mins

This is merely an advertisement for something that you do not need.

    Hi Compuable

Thanks for your advice. Before I attempt the fix I must give you some more information. It might be relevant or not.

I believed that Windows Defenders was a firewall. It's not. It deals with malware.

I have Microsoft's Security Essentials. Could that have turned Defender off because it, too, deals with malware?

It depends on which version of Windows you are using. In Vista and 7 MSE will automatically turn Defender off, so I guess you are using one of the two. In Win 8 Defender is the new name for MSE. Microsoft! You've gotta love 'em :-D

Bit puzzling though why you are getting a warning. Which OS is it?

I believe that is correct because while researching this for you I saw similar results about this "redundancy" problem reported on several support websites.

Here are Microsoft's Security Essentials Key Features:

    • Comprehensive malware protection
    • Supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP
    • Protects you quietly in the background
    • Automatic updates
Side Note: Here is the official Microsoft Safety and Security Site - Help protect your PC with: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

I have Vista: that explains things.

It wasn't a random error message. I'd tried to access Defender to see if it needed updated.
