Window sizing in IE

For the past day I have been getting windows that are less than one-third the screen size when I open IE. This also is true of any secondary window I open while in IE.

I know there is a way to cause windows to open in a maximized condition and that function used to be in the properties of the shortcut icon. I have looked all over and cannot for the life of me figure out what to do to get the windows to open in a maximized condition again. IE help has been to no avail.

    Any thoughts?

I'm lost. I right clicked on the webpage and it only opened the drop down menu. So I went to the shortcut on the desktop and tried it there but got the same thing. Where am I supposed to click?

Sorry I'm such a dummy but I'm learning.

    Oh, boy.

I went to the desktop and right clicked on the shortcut icon. I got the drop down menu and clicked on Properties. The next window has two tabs: General and Web Document. There is no shortcut tab. Is that because the icon on the desktop is already a shortcut icon?

That is what I was looking for in the first place. Unfortunately, the tab that in your example would say "Shortcut" says "Web Document" on mine. That's why I'm so confused.

I am using XP Home that came preloaded from HP.

I tried going to c:\program files\internet explorer but there is no application there. I honestly don't know where IE actually starts from.

I have the icon that is on the desktop pointing to my homepage as the URL.

I am running a search on all files for IE*.* .

Jim XP has a habbit of forgetting window settings now and again, this method works for me when this happens....

open IE if the window is small DON'T use maximise just drag it out to the full size you want, then holding down SHIFT close the window open IE up again and cross fingers its now full size ( you may have to do this a few times to make XP remember )

Plus only have one window open when you do this.

I did a search on the entire unit for "ieexplore.exe" and there was nothing found. That file does not exist on this unit.

    Halo

Nope. I tried it several times and I still have a 3 x 5 window when it opens.

Jim try the same as I posted but use the CTRL key instead of the Shift key..... I remember posting the same as I did above in relation to the same issue for someone else on here but they HIT the CTRL key instead & that worked for them.

also when you have resized by dragging the window, type in a URL and let the page load then hold down CTRL and close the window not by the X icon but use File > Close

    Halo

Tried it both ways to no avail. I don't have any idea of what caused the anomaly in the first place but it is certainly annoying.

The Internet Explorer executable program is Iexplore.exe - one less "e".

I did a search on iexplore.exe and got one hit. That file was IEXPLORE.EXE-2D97EBE6.pf in the C"\Windows\Prefetch folder.

I have absolutely no idea where iexplore.exe has gone to. There is, however, one thing that DV8Cowboy said when he posted "Right click on that and select 'send to' desktop".

Thereb were, at one time, several icons for IE on the desktop. I removed all but one and that one is the one that takes me to my e-mail provider. If the file iexplore.exe were moved to the desktop, could I have deleted it unknowingly and that is why I cannot find iexplore.exe?

Jim if you binned those icons then if you havnt emptied the trash you can revover them, also how are you getting onto the net, are you using another browser eg. Opera?

a few things to try, I have an idea your iexplorer files are hidden for some reason and on a search they wouldnt show up but if you do either of these steps you should be able to locate the application ( i just played with the options now... a plain search just finds IE icons )

    1. Open your HD and click Tools > Folder Options > View and put a tick in show hidden files and folders then apply then look in the c:\program files\internet explorer again also while in there right click a blank space and choose properties.. that will give you a run down of how many files and the space they take up.

    2. Search again but use Advanced Search
Open search and type iexplore then click Search Options > tick Advanced and then Search Now ( this listed 2 Iexplore files in the Internet Explorer folder rather than the 1 I see when opening it, it may also be able to locate your missing iexplore application )

    Halo

I got rid of those icons some time back and the bin has been emptied several times since.

I have no idea how I am getting on the Internet with no IE executable. I am definitely using IE 6.0.

When I did the searches, I ticked the box that says "Search hidden files and folders". In Tools > Folder Options > View the box "Show hidden files and folders" is already checked.

I searched on "All files and folders"; "Local hard drives (C;D)"; "Search system folders"; "Search hidden files and folders"; "Search subfolders".

It is just not on this unit; but it has to be getting it from somewhere!

Could it be aliased in some way?

    Halo

    (sigh)

I tried the SP1 reinstall to no avail. The search still finds only one file and that is the same one (IEXPLORE.EXE-2D97EBE6.pf ).

I guess I'm off to the full reinstall.

    I'll keep you posted.

Could your system possibly be using windows explorer to open web pages in the case that iexplore.exe may have been deleted?

    Main Frame and Halo

    All:

An interesting thing happened tonight. I got stuck in an unresponsive program so I hit ctrl-alt-del. I had IE running at the time.

There, in the list of running processes, was IEXPLORE.EXE .

Now I don't know where the unit is finding the thing but it sure as Hell is running it.

    I'm baffled.

    Halo:

If I reload the full IE6.0 do I have to uninstall it first? If I uninstall it, do I lose my favorites, etc?

Jim, you can try the following:

Right Click on Desktop, Select Properties, Select 'Desktop' Tab, Click 'Customize Desktop', Put a tick next to 'Internet Explorer'. Click 'OK's and 'Apply's to close the windows.

Your buddy should be there on the desktop.

    All

Here is the next wierd anomaly:

I ran Pest Patrol while IE was open and then clicked on the running processes log. There, in the processes, was iexplore.exe and the folder location given was C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORER.EXE . So I went dutifully to explorer and opened the folder and there it wasn't!

So I'm audibly talking to myself and I ask "What is the significance of the file name being in CAPS?" Madness, or no, I would have been happy as a pig in swill to answer myself; but I have not the vaguest idea of what that means.

    Anyone?

    Bingo!

I did what you said and got the icon. When I right clicked on it and asked for the properties, however, it gave me a window that looks exactly like the window you get when you click on Tools > Internet Options in IE. The only difference was the heading which said Internet Properties instead of I nernet Options.

So I created a shortcut from it and its properties window is as DV8Cowboy posted earlier in the thread. I was able to change its properties to open the window maximized. However ...

The secondary windows still open in the 2X5 inch format. Example:

I got an e-mail notification from MG and then clicked on the link to the post. The window opened in the same ol' place; same ol' size. I do, however get the full windon upon initialization of IE.

    Thanks!

just to say that my windows started opening at a smaller size too. i also have windows xp home, IE 6, and yahoo. i did as you suggested halo and it appears to have worked. ( :) ) at the same time my windows got smaller my writing got bigger. i tried putting the text size back to medium but it made no difference. how can the puter just change things on its own? doesnt it require somesort of command to do things anymore. does it really have a mind of its own?
