Window XP closes twice??

When I close XP, my icons disappear the XP closing splash screen flashes. My icons close again and the XP close splash screen flashes again. This started happening seveal months ago. I have done every thing in Malware removal guide. Nothing found except for Weatherbug. I didn't get concerned until I noticed that my cable modem is communicating with the pc when ever I log on way before windows xp comes up and it seems to be communicating all the way to shutdown. Now the computer does not turn off when I get the windows is saving setting screen, but it is clear that everything has shut down.

It seems that I have two windows XP's running at the same time, and I only control one. I hope its only my imagination.

Also I have noticed that when I boot up I see partition(2) in some of the start up files.

I have an older Compaq Pentium 4 with 1 gig memory. Window's XP is updated, Norton everything (Not sure that was a good idea)

Since everything runs find I am not attaching any logs.

Any assistance appreciated.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm not sure that any of the items you are having problems with are related to malware. As processes unload it is quite typical that icons will disappear and maybe return. This happens when process need to shutdown the Windows shell (explorer.exe) to unload. You may want to post a description of your problem in the Software Forum, or if you prefer I can just move this thread there.

Since you did not attach any of the logs requested, we cannot offer any opinions on your malware status. We require the logs so that we can verify that you do not have any visible forms of malware.

I would appreciate your transferring this query to the software forum. If necessary after software guys weigh in I will repost with logs. Thank you for your assistance.

Well I can move the thread to the Software Forum, but they do not want to see the logs that are requested in this forum. The logs requested here are for malware detection which right now it does not sound like you have, but again without seeing the logs I cannot say that with absolute certainty. At anyrate, I'm moving this to Software.
