I have a Quantex computer, Pentium III(r), 450 MHz, 8.7 GB, 63 MB Ram, operating Sys is Windows 98SE.
I tried to re-install Windows 98 SE from oem Windows 98 SE CD, using Toshiba dvd-rom.
It did install, however, it created a new folder "Windows.000" versus writing over old program, "Windows." The cpu boots to it, but it is very limited program, i.e. no printer/driver can be installed, no modem, etc. I went to "Add/Remove programs" and there is no uninstall "Windows 98." How do I remove this copy of Windows 98? My old "Windows" folder appears to be intact and unchanged.
Also, when I try to re-install W98 again, after getting rid of "Windows.000", is there anything I can do to eliminate this problem of a new folder being created instead of overwriting my "Windows" folder?
    Sorry, no backup file.

Hmmm.... please correct me if I'm wrong here. I understand that you had a working installation, inserted your CD, and installed from there? What you should do is the following:

    1. Configure BIOS to boot from CD (post back if you need help on this)
    2. Insert the installation CD and restart your computer

This shoudl welcome you with a command prompt. ("c:\>", typically) from here, we do the following:

    1. Type 'format c:' (without the quotes)
    2. Press enter

This will format the harddrive, leaving NOTHING on it. If you have important files you wish to keep, then you should burn them to CD, or copy to floppy, or somehow preserve them. Once the format is completed, you can do the following:

    1. Type 'd:' (without the quotes)
    2. Press enter
    3. Type 'setup' (without the quotes)
    4. Press enter

This will run the Win98 setup program, and following the prompts will leave you with a single good working copy of the operating system

    Thanks for the response.
I would like very much to avoid reformatting the drive,if possible. I don't want to lose all the programs and data I have on the c: drive. I can't send stuff to my zip drive or internet or printer. I do have a copy of my "Windows" folder on the d: drive. Any other way of deleting or othersise eliminating "Windows.ooo"?

    Hi, I am back.
I reformatted the c: drive and reinstalled Windows 98SE. I was able to get my dsl modem to work, but the cpu doesn't recognize my internal dial-up modem. Also, my resolution is minumum and I can't enlarge it. Cpu says I only have vga. However, I know I had at least 256 colors before the re-format. Is there something I am overlooking? Any help or direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    mel

After a reformat and reinstallation of Windows, the only drivers available are the generic drivers windows needs to run. They are not specific to any hardware in your system. What you need to do is find the drivers for the components in your system.

We'd be happy to help if you can let us know some more information about your computer. You said it was a Quantex-- is there any model number?

Quantex went bankrupt some time back.

I found some drivers for Quantex, but there are many and we'd need to know which components you have. http://list.driverguide.com/list/company875/index.html

    I can't find a model #, however. Systemboard is model #M6TWG. Invoice from Quantex say I have pkg 11E: -- M450 w/p-3 450 (m-2x);MBD-P2M18cb--BIO/MATX/no LM78/slot1-socket 3;PRD-4MX64/PC100--64MB PC100 Memory;
    PIII 450mhz cpu w/ 512 cache;Active heatsink for PIII;HDD-MAX8710--8.7GB/ATA-66/5400RPM HD;3D video and wavetable sound;dvd-m120wt-sq1a--Toshiba 3rd gen dvd-rom drive;Panasonic 3.5" /1.44 Floppy;mdm-v56p/at-s--56K v.90 fax/modem;cas-atx7ag--Quantex midtower atx case;internet keyboard and ms mouse; It had MLI691 speakers, but I changed to Altec Lansing ACS31.
I tried your link, but it seems to be down for repairs. Does any of this help?

I realize this information is way to late, but I wanted to point out that when one does a "repair installation" of 9x (i.e. 98se), make sure you don't accept the default location of windows. What windows noticed was a pre-existing install of windows, so it created a windows.000, if you were to do another repair, it would create windows.001. To fix this situation, one must TELL windows to install in a location of their choosing. Simply remove the .000 portion, then it will do a proper repair.

    Here is your drivers:

Thanks for your help so far, but do I need to post this elsewhere to help me get my sound back?
