Just learning Windows 10. I wanted to place the Weather Channel App in my start screen. Went to the App Store. I skipped 'select an account' and clicked on the 'Free' button. If that is a download button then I have been in a status of "Working..." for over 10 minutes. Decided to close out the window. I am trying to discern, overall, if a Microsoft Account is a necessary evil or helper regarding Win10. I have searched the web for a few answers. Can't really conclude anything. Can apps be retrieved without a MA? Have read that ones email address is quite vulnerable with MA - imagine that! - I read that on the web! Is a MA safe? Would the forum please chime in to help me sort out one of the many things to learn about Win 10?? Are there honest pros and cons that stand out to having a MA for Win10? Never had one for Win7Pro. Were they even available for Win7?

    Thanks,

    Dekade

It should be there by default in Win 10 when you search in 'search windows' in bottom left of screen > type in: Weather App > see it appear at the top > right-click it > choose 'PIN to Start'.

Thanks MaxTurner. I already know of the app - The Weather App - and how to view it. The Weather App is not 'The Weather Channel App'. The Weather Channel App is the one I have used for years on smartphones and I really like the UI and selection of info. Thus, we're back to my original post.

I just installed the 'Weather Channel App' in about 10 seconds (it's a 66mb download) asks if I want it pinned to Start, and then it just asks for a geographical location. I am signed in to windows via a MA, so maybe that's why it was so swift!

    Thanks again, MaxTurner.
Again, I reiterate, this post is NOT totally about The Weather Channel App. I am specifically looking for support/info about Microsoft Accounts. See Post #1.

An MA works fine for me - see post #4. It's no less secure than any other email account and you don't have to use the Microsoft account password, or even that account itself, to sign into windows. You can set up a Local Account, the choice is yours.
Maybe you would be better having separate threads on an MA, and windows apps.

I have had a Microsoft account for 2 years and have not had a single problem.

I have a Microsoft account but login to my computer with a local account. I only use OneDrive, which works fine with a local account but if I want a file or app on another machine then I have to login to my account first. I also have an Outlook.com account in addition to Gmail and don't believe it is any more vulnerable than any other email service.

I have an MS account. I assume an online outlook webmail account is sufficient.
    Looks like I opened it in 2012. I haven't had any problems. (I don't run Windows 10).

MaxTurner - the WC app was an example of representing the implementation of an MA; not a prelude/requirement for an ongoing thread. This thread IS about MA.
The above three quotes - - that's the stuff I'm looking for. In all reality I have just been trying to get the feel of what having a MA is all about. I am not a play around with computers kind of person. I use computers to get specific word processing, spreadsheets, and database work completed for my household and home office. Strictly a software programs person. IMO-Seems like the majority of apps (Smartphone or Computer) are more focused on gimmick type things. Nonetheless, as mentioned in the beginning, I do like the Weather Channel App and wanting to download it was the driver behind this thread. Probably won't ever download another app. Just thought it was cool how Win10 could put it into my start area. Thus, I in turn wanted to learn about the aspects (good or bad) on a MA. Thanks to all of you for your help and input. If anyone wishes to continue with input - no problem on my end - will enjoy reading any and all.

Hey D. I started a MS hotmail account years ago. I wanted a clean account and figured then that MS was as good as any. Only use it for real world needs. Insurance, software registration and such. MS has rolled it along at times as a Live

account and now an Outlook account but through all it still uses my original login. A very clean account as far as junk goes. I did sign in when I first used my 8.1 system but soon went to my regular offline ways. Never had a problem. I have

worked on other's pc's that used an email other than MS so you could go that way if more comfortable.Thunk I gave a nickname ,age, and street address i had aat the time. Not much real info needed.

    Imandy Mann,

Thanks a ton for the detail on your real world experiences. Definitely helps me draw conclusions.

    Kind Regards,
