Windows 10 Crashes With No Bsod When Playing Some Games

As of Saturday night, 2/25/18 (my wife had been playing games on it with no issues Friday) our Windows 10 machine started hard crashing directly in to a reboot with no BSOD when playing (so far at least) 2 games. I first experienced the issue with Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Not thinking too much about the patchy history of the game, I attempted to create a new game, as well as load an old save from 7 Days to Die when that didn't work. All games are experiencing the same crash to reboot within a few moments of entering the game. I've tested the following:

Uninstall and reinstall video card driver
Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic - Passed
Ran sfc /scannow - Passed
Ran chkdsk - Passed
Ran full scan with Malware bytes - nothing found
Checked for driver dumps - no issues
checked Event viewer logs for Windows > System, and Windows > Application - No listed events, errors or crashes at the exact time of the crash
Clean boot Windows
Clean boot with all Startup items disabled
Ran GPU-Z, all stats show passing

Crash Dump Analysis

Conclusion
Crash dumps are enabled but no valid crash dumps have been found. In case you are experiencing system crashes, it may be that crash dumps are prevented from being written out. Check out the following article for possible causes: If crash dumps are not written out.

 

Sudden crashes with no dumps typically means the crash was so sudden, the system did not have time to create a dump file or save it disk. This is often a sign of excessive heat and/or power problems. And note gaming is typically very demanding, thus generally results in lots of heat.

You need to make sure the interior is clean of heat trapping dust and dirt and that all fans are spinning. Monitor the temps. I use and recommend Core Temp full time to monitor my CPU temps.

Also great is HWiNFO64. It does not have a system tray icon component but is very informative, if not too informative for first time users. So when first using, check "Sensors-only" when prompted, then look under the motherboard section, check the System and CPU temp, and your +3.3V, +12V and +5V values. These are the sensor readings for the voltages being supplied to your motherboard from your PSU. According the ATX Form Factor standard, PSUs must maintain voltage tolerances within ±5% of required specifications.

Acceptable Tolerances:

12VDC ±5% = 11.4 to 12.6VDC
5VDC ±5% = 4.75 to 5.25VDC
3.3VDC ±5% = 3.14 to 3.47VDC​

It is important to understand that no software monitoring program can conclusively verify a PSU is good (or bad). They cannot measure ripple. And because they take a snapshot in time of sensor values, they cannot show if the power supply is regulating power properly under all expected load levels. Plus, those motherboard sensors are not always accurate either.

To "conclusively" test a PSU, it takes a trained technician with an oscilloscope or dedicated power supply analyzer - expensive and sophisticated test equipment. So for most users (and even pros) the best way to verify if your power supply is good (or bad) is to swap in a known good spare (or trade from a second computer) and see if you have the same problems.

Since EVERYTHING else inside the computer depends on good clean stable power, this should be done before spending money replacing anything else (except maybe a new case fan!).

 

The PSU was actually purchased for my old gaming computer and it migrated over. That PSU was purchased in 2012. Based on what you've verified with me, I'll be leaning heavily toward old age. I'll investigate further and report back. Thank you both again for your update.

 

Age does affect, and will kill all electronics - eventually. But age alone should not be used as a deciding factor. There are many power supplies still chugging along, doing their jobs just fine after 10 years or longer - even no-name, generic, off-brand ones. But being 6 years old would still be incentive for me to verify that one is still doing its job correctly.

I know you didn't request it, but I wanted to provide the snapshot I took from HWiNFO. All tolerances and temperatures look clean and stable. As a side note, the issue only appears to be happening with graphics intensive games. For Kingdom Come: Deliverance, I turned down the resolution and quality down to minimum, and put it in windowed mode. The game last several minutes before crashing. However, when I turned it back up, the game fails to load as far as the initial menu.

 

Yeah, those voltages and temps look great. But again, that is taken at a single point in time - and when the computer is working fine. The program cannot detect or reveal intermittent problems. So swapping in a good PSU is still a good idea.

You might try running with 1 stick of RAM at a time too. You can run MemTest86 to test your RAM. Allow the diagnostics to run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors – not even one. However, while software-based RAM diagnostic tools are good, none are conclusive. If they report any errors, even one, the RAM is bad. But it is not totally uncommon for them to report no problems, yet the RAM still fails in use, and/or when paired with other RAM.

Well, I know this was from a while ago, but I wanted to provide an update. After determining that the root cause must be something to do with the Power Supply, I put the machine to the side until I had time to work on it further. Today, I opened it back up and Nvidia had a sizable update for their video card drivers. Clean install of the drivers + PC reboot = working machine. I still plan on updating the PS, but for now this most recent update appears to be working as expected. Tested 2k Kingdom Come for about an hour, 7 Days to Die, and a heavily modded 4K Skyrim Special edition and have had no issues.
