I got this error due to ?????, and it appeared to be a router problem. After screwing around 2 days, I finally figured out it was a cable modem problem, and a remote reset by the ISP fixed the problem. We had some heavy rains and electrical storms here when the problem occurred, but the usual reset button fix did not work. Do you think the weather could have caused this?

It could have. A lightning strike could have knocked out the connection. Your ISP may have detected and corrected the problem on their end and THEY needed to correct your end.
