Windows 10 Folder Problem

In my folders I can't select "Ascending/Descending" in the sort by option. The options are both greyed out. And there is no dot by the current selected options.
Ascending/Descending can only be selected if I group the items first. If you click on the link below you will see a graphic represention of what I'm talking about. Help please.

You have to sort or group the folders by something before Ascending/Descending becomes available.
