The Machine freezes up and has to be force started. A look at Event Viewer showed this: http://screencast.com/t/lMJM5PoJ5sM in the "Detail" tab

    Any suggestions for a fix?

This issue first appeared in Windows 7 (did you upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7?) and concerned Security Essentials. The only solution I could find was this:

Yes I updated from Windows 7. yes I saw that solution at "howtogeek."
I think that was true for Windows 7 but Windows 10 defender is disabled from the "Settings > Update and Security > Windows Defender" location and every time you cycle the Desktop, when it restarts it automatically enables defender. So the steps above cannot be followed. I tried, disabling it and deleting the offending file, but it does not work. The machine still freezes up randomly.

Since you've already had Windows 10 installed via upgrade, you've got a Digital Key associated with your Microsoft account. It may be a PITA to do so but the only other thing I can suggest is do a clean install of Windows 10.

That is what I was thinking and was afraid of. My machine won't be easy to re-create. A clean installed is radical. But, it may be the only solution.
    Thanks.

    Hi

Great answers above and I agree outside chance of clean install for completely removing this and getting a good working OS, as well as some of the fixes worth trying beforehand, do backup your core data though, but one thing springs to mind is conflict, what do you have running at startup and a startup log would be good to view,

Thanks Eldon. I did as you suggested and long story short, I did the sfc command running as an Admin and got the message"...did not find any integrity violations." I also unistalled and installed the latest GEForve drivers for my machine, however, it still freezes. I seems to freeze up when I am running "any" Browser.
    Any other suggestions?

Did you try the second & third links?

I spent a few hours on Tenforums and found myself lost; the "follow-this" instructions are concatanated in such a way that it takes forever to do anything. I have to clarify that on the desktop in question, any browser freezes it, so I was running the browser on a different computer trying to follow the direction on the sick computer. The last website basically said "do a clean install." So, I tried that, BUT, the desktop froze in the middle of it.
After spending a day and a half trying all this. I walked away from this fail. Tomorrow may be another day.
    Thanks for the help

Before trying re-installation, did you wipe (erase) the drive? If you chose "Format" from within Setup, I've found that it leaves remnants from the previous installation behind.

I always wipe the drive or boot from a USB drive with Windows installed on it and Delete the Volume from within Disk Management.

This is what I did and so far it seems to have worked. I saw a YouTube method, simple straight forward and I did not lose ANY data or apps. For those having terminal W10 cancer, I highly recommend doing this.

Thanks for all the suggestions though

    @randl,

    Thanks for the video.

This is off topic but, I can't start a Conversation with you. I don't know if you have them turned off.

Your User Name (randl) struck a chord with me because I remember a man who told me his mother called him Randl. Are you, by any chance, Randy Lucas of or formerly of Universal City, TX?

Hi @mdonah , no, I am not that person, although I do live in TXs.
The Desktop (finally) is working as expected. I had been battling this scrappy problem for over one month and it was driving me insane.
Thanks for all the help here.
