Windows 10 Privacy Concerns

As the free Windows 10 offer cuts off this summer, I'm considering whether to upgrade or stick with Windows 8. My main concern about upgrading is the privacy invasion that several people have mentioned. Are there reliable and effective ways to stop Windows from invading my privacy with Windows 10? If so, is there a good list I can consult to systematically eliminate these invasions? Windows 10 may have bells and whistles, but if I can't keep my personal information or activities private, I'll live without it.

My guess, it will be extended because MS isn't real happy with the low numbers.

One update KB2952664, dealing with Get Win 10, has just been released for the 20th time! I suspect we'll see it a few more times.

If they're still working out the bugs and possibly extending it, then I may hold off. They really shot themselves in the foot with these security issues. Maybe if few enough people opt-in, they'll step back and return our privacy. Thanks for the information.

What does O & O do? Does it turn off all of the (discovered) places Microsoft is collecting our information or inform me so I can?

The program is not installed, you just run the executable, so why not just run it and look at it yourself? You have 30 days to revert if you don't want to keep 10.

Windows 10 has some privacy issues which does have some fixes too. I would suggest you to wait and look for Windows 10 reviews and errors after the new Windows 10 release.

You can find the fixes for Windows 10 privacy issue in below link.

Thanks for the link, it goes quite some way to putting the Win 10 privacy issues in better perspective.

That's very helpful, Lisa. Thank you. When is the new Windows 10 set for release?

With any program - whether hosted on MG or elsewhere - if you just click on the developer link you can read in full what it does:
    https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
As for 'bugs' in Windows 10 - as opposed to features that differentiate it from older OSs - I'm not aware of any.
Privacy issues are not 'bugs' - they have been around since Windows XP. Program such as O&O ShutUp 10 work fine.
The issues that some users have with Win10 are no different to the issues people had with XP when released, Vista when released, Win 7 when released and Windows 8 when released.
Many people running Win 10 are having no experience of 'bugs' outside of issues with the upgrade from an older OS. I like Win 10 personally and have had no problems with it.

As for the poster talking about the 'future' release of Win 10, it was released on 29 July LAST YEAR.
If people currently want Win 10 free - via a Win7, 8.1 upgrade excluding Ultimate users - then they have until 29 July this year. After that (or any new deadline MS set) they will have to pay for it.

That Digital Trends article is many months old. I consider it out of date. It doesn't actually include any simple way of blocking aspects of Win 10 privacy - but programs like ShutUp10 do that clearly and very easily.

I am not experiencing any type of bug issues with windows 10 64 pro.

In fact since i fixed my hard drive i have zero issues.I have completely tweaked it so that it runs games at full speed and less junk in the system that microsoft adds.

Sounds like you are under the impression that Win 8 doesn't have any of the privacy stuff in 10 that you are concerned about. In fact MS have been plugging the same features into Win 8 for ages, and if you are accepting all important updates every month you will already have a load of them.

I took the time this month to check what MS have thrown at Win 8 under Important. You may be shocked -

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583. This turns up every month so you may already have it.

    Hello Delltop,

Sorry for the long delay in reply, was busy in somewhere. As MaxTurner said Windows 10 free upgrade with stop in 29th July this year and after that there will be no longer free upgrade.

Users who wish to run Windows 10 after the expiration have to purchase the Windows 10 license key.

    Dear Lisa

I'm a little concerned by your first post here. The article you linked to did not, in reality, explain the full nature of privacy exposures in Windows 10. They are far wider than covered in that article which was mostly praise for how MS details with the mass of system specific information that is leaked in Windows 10 default settings.
I have no reason to believe MS will use the information in a malicious way, but that's not the issue at all. I don't hand out my private personal information even to trusted people I know since it's a silly and unnecessary risk. Banks are being hacked all the time causing major disruption and initial loss to customers and if we can't always trust them to secure our private data, I'm not going to trust MS any more than I do banks.
Neither did the article even scratch the surface of how to stop those privacy issues. Moreover it is frankly out of date and so of course gave no information about reputable programs that really do answer users privacy concerns in a way that article failed, which was also so 'Pro' Microsoft, I doubt its reliability in the context of impartiality. The same applies in the incorrect assertion when you suggest to the OP "I would suggest you to wait and look for Windows 10 reviews and errors after the new Windows 10 release." Windows 10 has been on full public release for the best part of a year already. We know in complete detail how much privacy is compromised and we have several programs that plug that 100% on a customisable basis.
As you work for a company that solely deals with a major Microsoft product, I wonder if you are in the best position to advise on this much wider issue.

    Dear MaxTurner,

I did not mention about the ongoing Windows 10. What I did and written about upcoming Windows 10 new release. It has nothing to do with my company otherwise I would have given the details about last day for Windows 10 upgrade.

I had a word with the MS Tech Guy and I posted the same in the thread.

If you check my post again, I had mention about fixes. I completely agreed with the point regards to user's data sensitivity. Users can surely have their data back up or lock onto some environment and the fix which I gave has shown the idea.

What I believe if the fix works for the user then it does not bother for me at least, when it was posted originally.

    Regards,
    Lisa Graves

    Lisa and Max

If you guys wish to have full privacy on windows 10 i can show how to tweak windows 10 to bear minium. Most Os systems only need it to be bear.It is really not that hard to get privacy sure you may have to disable alot of stuff in order to do this.In which case most people like me do not need all of the bells and whistle's in fact a lot of the bells and whistle's tend to slow down the OS.

We already know how to do it using O & O ShutUp10 as linked to in posts # 2 and #10.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/oo_shutup10.html
(And there are other similar programs now to do the same thing.)
O&O lists every single privacy issue and has notes on the effect of turning off each one off and has 'recommended' and 'limited' states with explanations for each.
Most users will never involve themselves in multiple manual actions at the risk of mistakes.
