Won't upgrade but will use it on devices that originally came with it installed.

I had to upgrade to Win 10 Pro ages ago in order to have the same OS as work and I currently have two PCs with i7 processors that only support Win 10 for an OS.
Win 10 is such a POS that over Christmas I built an AMD Ryzen box just so I can run Win 7 Pro again.
If I could dump Win 10 on the other boxes i would so in a heartbeat ,,,,,there is not one redeeming feature as far as I am concerned

Processors have nothing to do with supporting software!
Your operating system is installed on your hard drive!

A core i7 spec system will support ANY OS you choose to install on your HDD????

I found THIS which might possibly explain joffa's statement. Would be good if anyone has anything more recent. Can't relate to joffa's POS comment at all, works a treat here on three systems. No way would I want to revert to anything earlier.

Works a treat here too Earth......wouldn't use anything else ;)
Although I do run Win7 Ultimate and even XP on my older systems for Sec testing purposes.

I cant see how a processor can detriment a boot loader from a clean install though?
Could it be a bios thing?

    Maybe I misunderstood...….Im good at that :p

If you are wanting your "next generation" i7, i5 or i3 to be using integrated graphics (like most business PCs) then with these chips, this is not supported unless you use Win 10. Currently no work around for this issue other than having a separate graphics card. There is a bodgy work around for driver updates if using Win 7 but it is a bit of a process and no guarantee of reliability...............hmmmm......taking their OS in this direction is a crap decision by Micro$oft that is motivated by greed and it makes people like me consider changing all the business PCs over to Linux/Unix ;)

I reckon that's garbage, its not possible to achieve this from a clean install.

I would like someone to explain to me how they can do it?
From a technical point of view...….other than Microsofts

I think they mean that it not possible to store the windows key of any other OS in bios, other than Win10.

Here's what Im willing to do to prove this point.

As I run a computer company in Bendigo Vic, Im willing to drive from Bendigo to Joffa's place and install Windows 7 Ultimate on any machine that he so chooses. Free of charge!

Choose a machine Joffa, back up what you need from it to an external, and give me a time that suits you!

Sorry, it will cost you $16.90 AUD for a genuine Win7 key from my Microsoft Partner Network, but if you have a cold beer handy I will wave this!

Anyone care to place a wager?...….let the games begin ;)

I wish I had more extensive knowledge of this stuff as, like Replicator, I simply do not believe that Win 7 or 8.1 will not run on the latest processors. I've been looking for more/later information than that from 2016 and have found THIS which, as I read it, confirms that they WILL run, but possibly may not be updated as they would be on older processors. Big deal! There is at least one senior and well respected member here who regularly states that updates can safely be ignored and practices what he preaches!

So joffa, take up Replicator's offer, and you will both be winners - you with a nearly free working Win 7 and Replicator having the satisfaction of having put his beliefs on the line and being proved right :p

Firstly we bought four i5 Intel NUCs late last year and there was no way to install Win 7 as a USB plug in DVD drive could not be made to work and it wouldn't read Win 7 off a memory stick. Took the NUCs back to the supplier who told us the only way is to purchase Win 10. I mentioned we already had 10 new Win 7 Pro licences and wished to use these. The supplier is a Microsoft partner and were told by Micro$oft that these NUCs can only be loaded with Win 10 so we were stuck and had to then purchase 4 copies of Win 10.

That being said.......sounds like a great deal to me Replicator and thanks for the offer. When would you like to come?
Hmmmm.....it is a bit of a drive from Bendigo (I know coz my sister in law lives at Bendigo and our niece lives in Mildura) so when you come over. you could stay overnight in the guest room :) I will fire up the BBQ and have some cold beers on hand and there will also be some old red available as I have a fair size wine collection.
BTW I have several brand new and unused Win 7 Pro keys but it will be handy to have an extra serial number up our sleeve.
The only problem is the timing.....as of yesterday work has started on building a big gable roofed pergola onto the side of my house and behind the house there are also earthworks starting in preparation to building a big workshop. The concrete slab goes down in about 4 weeks after the retaining walls are finished and then the shed will take another 7 days to be built. So for the next 8 weeks the household will be in turmoil and I will be distracted with organising tradies and ironing out any problems that may arise so maybe make the trip in late April or early May. The PC to play with will be an i7 and I will pick up a new 500Gb or 1Tb Samsung SSD so it will be a clean install.
I will pm you with more details. Thanks again for the great offer and look forward to catching up and having a beer :D:cool:

I sure will take up this great offer as it is a big leap of faith for Replicator and if he succeeds he will get the the bragging rights ;) :D
I don't really need any more copies of Win 7 Pro or Win 10 Pro as I already have plenty of brand new copies on hand., I think the real win here will be meeting a fellow MG member that lives in my state and having a few cold beers and a few steaks cooked on the BBQ and if there is a solution to the issue then that is good too.:D:cool:

I hope you two make it work! Would be nice to see a way to get around MS's roadblocks. At the same time I'm curious if linux distros would work on these machines ( or any other bootable os or utility disks). I've been able to do a lot with the 8.1 and 10 machines that I have here, but they're not skylake class material. Sooner or later the skylake will be the new bottom of the barrel so I'm sure I'll wind up with one someday.
    Keep us posted!

I like trying to keep up with windows information and computer parts information.

In a few years or so some hardware will only work on certain operating system's.Hell microsoft might give up all together on windows it self. And than Linux will be the major OS.Company's tend to go bankrupt after so long.Be cause they get sick of dealing with it.

I actively purge them if I get them on this machine.
I need to run something close to a 'known' configuration, so updates are out. They have broken things here in the past, win8.1.

I just shelved any thoughts of updating my hardware, though Heaven knows it needs it. Four year old i5 PC, two five year old Thinkpads and a God knows how old Medion PC designed for XP and Vista. All run Win 10 just fine but I like to play with other stuff too.

I rarely upgrade a Windows computer. I use the OS that was on it when purchased.

On the other hand, android upgrades itself when the manufacturer decides it is time. My tablet is now on its 3rd version of android.

    @joffa
I have just about finished re-installing on my spare (copy system originally) 1tb hard drive.
I have Core i7 451ou 2gz- 2.6ghz, 16gb ram. I also have disks and keys for many different ops, and versions (I am a Tinkerer)
My Lenova Came with Widows 8.1 pro - I upgraded to W10 ( was only given Home version on free upgrade) Installed W10 Pro.
Got pretty fed up with of W10 -Randam freezes, graphics O.K with earlier distributions, but later with version 1809, becomes crap.
I have now re-installed with W7 Ultimate, and have almost finished installing W8.1 pro, and W10, and XP .
All systems are updating o.k- I
I use advanced system care Ultimate- this has anti-virus protection -This updated XP, and W7, 8.1, and W10- no problem-
I also used driver booster (pro)- Again -drivers , no problem.
I have rigged W10 VM not to update further - so far , no problem.
My Versions will be customized more, as I get time, because, I can clone them , or, I can just not save the updated version in W10, if I have issues (better than system restore, in a way) or, test out on the clone.
I feel this is my preferred way forward .
Then I can use any OS I fancy on the day.

My suspicion is that MS rely on a bios security feature in UEFI to attempt to achieve this although I have yet to find enough time, or a said processor in the running to confirm this.
Im confident that I can install any OS after configuring the bios to boot in Legacy mode!

MS wont even relay any info to me on how they hope to achieve their aims, but they did say that they are even having second thoughts on initiating this planned restriction.
    Time will tell I guess!

@joffa......I have a conference in Adelaide to attend next week and will be back on Friday March 8th.
Will slip you a PM mate when I return and we can organize to get the ball rolling.
Thank you also for your kind offer of the spare room...…..may need it after a BBQ and a couple juices
Look forward to meeting you mate!

    Cheers
    Wayne ;)

Howdy Wayne, BTW IRL I'm Pete ;)
My understanding of the i5 NUC situation last year is that the processor, motherboard and BIOS now team up to treat a legacy USB connection differently when it detects any of the new processors. I tried to install Win 7 Pro by first connecting an external DVD ROM to the ports but no go so then I thought the "ace up my sleeve" would be imaging Win 7 Pro onto a USB stick but still no go so then I formatted NTFS onto a new USB stick using a Win 10 Pro PC then copied the Win 7 Pro install image across without overwriting the boot sector on the memory stick so it would think it was Win 10 but still no go then in desperation installed a copy of Win 7 Pro onto one of the SSDs from the NUCs using another older HP PC and then put the SSD back in the NUC and I couldn't get any graphics output......at this point I had wasted a lot of time trying these things and many other ideas so in desperation went to my supplier and asked them to load Win 7 Pro on for me and offered to pay their techs if they succeeded but like me they couldn't do it either and when they contacted Micro$oft were told the only way to install Windows on these i5 NUCs is to buy Win 10 Pro on memory sticks. When we did this it loaded immediately. I didn't waste any more time and left with my tail between my legs and four new copies of Win 10 Pro :(......lucky it was the company's money and I just had to explain the $800 budget blowout to the managing director:rolleyes:

Good luck with the conference in the city of churches and I will await your PM :)
Hopefully the smoke will have cleared when you return as the town next door is Nar Nar Goon which is right in the middle of a major bushfire in the Bunyip State Forest. The fire is still out of control and is burning over 10,000 hectares and still growing. There are 850 firefighters deployed and 10 water bombing helicopters and planes and they have been water bombing and hosing continuously for the last 3 days. https://www.theage.com.au/national/...s-massive-bushfire-rages-20190303-p511hj.html
The fire was started by lightning strikes last Thursday night and has spread quickly because of the 40ºC days and a couple of 28ºC nights plus it has also been very windy and with no rain there has only been the firefighters to slow it down :(
My place should be safe but from my yard, you can see the glow and the orange sky at night which means there is still a lot of the forest burning. Today they closed the main highway between Pakenham and Drouin because the fire has burnt to the edge of the roadway and the CFA (Country Fire Authority) expect it to remain closed for several days.
    Enough about the bushfire.......

Likewise I am also looking forward to meeting you :D:cool:
    We will speak soon
    Cheers
    Pete
