Hi. I have a Toshiba satellite L840D-12P laptop. It originally came with windows 8. But I downloaded windows 10 a couple months ago and no problems have occurred. Around yesterday I realized my laptop was getting very laggy so I decided to completely reset it. So I chose to remove everything in settings. The laptop turned itself off and sat at "resetting PC 1%" for around 3 hours. I turned it off and tried again. Same result. I turned it off for the third time and decided to just live with it. But the third time time I turned it on it showed the Toshiba leading innovation screen for about 20 seconds (no loading spiral) then turned itself off and repeated this over and over. It doesn't respond to anything I do. (I've tried booting up safe mode) and nothing is responding. I've had the laptop for around 3 years, so I have no warranty for the old thing. I don't know how to fix this problem. Thanks for any help! ( I don't have any CDs to reboot windows or anything)

If the system came without any external recovery media, ie it is within Windows itself usually through safe mode recovery options, and you cannot - no matter how you try - get to the boot up options, then you may have to seek help from Toshiba by them giving you, or selling you, a recovery disk. If they do it is likely to be the Windows 8 originally installed, and then you would first have to update it to 8.1, and all subsequent updates.
You need to look carefully - probably on the bottom/base - of the laptop for the Windows Authentication Product Key because you will need that when installing Windows afresh. If you have any friends/relatives etc who themselves have a genuine Windows 8 disk, as long as you have the Product Key for your system, you might be able to use that.

The laptop's 3 years old and came with Windows 8 so, the Product Key will be embedded in the UEFI. There won't be a Product Key sticker. If you get the OEM Recovery CD from Toshiba, it should automatically activate Windows as soon as you go on the internet.

Thank you so much! Just bought a recovery disk. Hope that it comes soon!

    Ok hope that goes well.
Just a note of guidance, once the recovery disk reinstalls Windows 8, you will need to bring Windows fully up to date and I suggest you install the updates in small batches - restarting your system each time - rather than allow it to install what could be many dozens of them at the same time. Make sure each time you restart your system that you allow it to complete the 'Windows is configuring updates - don't turn off your system' each time.
Once it has installed all updates for Windows 8 - which must include Windows 8.1 - you can then consider doing the upgrade to Windows 10 again.
Before you do the Win 10 upgrade, it is worth checking that all device drivers are up to date. A very good program for that is Driver Talent
