I have Win8.1 and did not want to update to Win10 until near the end of the free upgrade period. Now it appears as Windows 10 is forcing a upgrade as it has moved into the Windows Updates without me agreeing to upgrade.:( I have Windows Auto Updates turned off. I do install all critical windows updates.

Up until now I have been able to ignore the Win10 upgrade download and choose critical windows updates. As of a few days ago if I I try to do a Windows Update then Windows 10 starts to download. I have to cancel updates to stop it.

I will most likely want to upgrade to Win10 later but I do not want to right now. I don't have time right now for any unforeseen problems that might arise with the upgrade. I don't want to make adjustments that will remove the option for a later free upgrade. How do I stop it from downloading for now but leave the option of downloading later, most likely just before the free upgrade period ends.

From what I have read this is happening to lots of people and there are a lot of suggestions out there but I'd rather get advice from the Geeks here at MG.;)
    Thanks!

As mentioned I am beyond just disabling the reminder as Win10 is trying to install with any Win Update. I can deal with the reminder just as I have since it first appeared but I do mind the auto install of Win10 as it is trying to do. In Windows Updates it does not give me a option of unchecking the Win10 Upgrade. So it is leaving me with no choice but to not try any updates as of now.

When my 8.1 laptop started with all that I was able to hide the Win 10 upgrade and that stopped it. Right click the update to get the hide option.

Thanks Earthling. After a reboot I was able to Check Updates and bring up All Updates and uncheck Win10 was available where it was not before. Weird but for now I have unchecked it and we will wait and see how long it stays that way. Anyway I was able to do the regular updates so that is good.

Well it did not take long to come back. I updated some other software that required a restart and after the restart the Win10 Upgrade is back in Win Updates waiting. So if I try to update anything in Windows Update it will download Win 10. Ugh!!! Guess I will have to try to uncheck it and hide it every time if there are Critical Updates for Windows if it will let me.

Have you tried hiding it? This shouldn't be a problem as long as any computer you either don't want to upgrade, or on which you want to defer the upgrade, has updates on download and notify only. There are five systems here, including one dual boot with 8.1 and 10. The other three are all Win 7, and all systems that haven't yet been upgraded have both the GWX icon and KB3035583 installed but none of them is attempting to push the upgrade. I have hidden the update on all of them and can activate it at any time with the GWX icon.

I did hide it and after a reboot it came back. I have done so again, so we will see how it goes.

I suspect that GWX (the Get Windows 10 application) is in one of the system startups and enables the line in Windows Update for you to download and upgrade to Windows 10. I suggest that temporarily disabling GWX from the startup and/or moving the GWX executable as well as toggling and hiding the update in Windows Update.

When GWX first appeared there was, and probably still is considerable confusion as to how to stop it. At the time I put together a list of Win 10 related updates and uninstalled all of them from each computer that I didn't want upgraded. Maybe this is why I'm not having any issues now. I cannot offer any guarantees that it is either accurate or complete but it hasn't caused any harm here. Some of them, such as KB3035583, may have reinstalled themselves, I haven't checked as everything is OK.

I disabled GWX and after one reboot Win10 Upgrade is not showing in Windows Updates. I'll let you know if it comes back up again.

Good news! Did you remove KB3035583? If not, how did you disable GWX?

In the meantime I checked my 8.1 system to see which of those in my list had reappeared, and it was only KB3035583 and KB2976978, another telemetry update. I think KB3035583 will try to install itself again so guard against that. I would also uninstall my list above, especially those I know to be telemetry.

Earthling no I did not remove any files. I found GWX in Task Manager-Processes and disabled it there.
Question about the updates you list to uninstall I assume removing those will not prevent the free upgrade later, right?

I was able to upgrade one Win 7 system to 10 afterwards so that looks OK, but anyway you can always d/load them and reinstall if you record what you have done.

You can stop a process in Task Manager but how would you disable it for future boots? Is this something I've never understood?

You can stop a process in Task Manager but, you'll have to end the service in Services. And probably also disable the startup in msconfig (System Configuration.

Eldon CWX does not show up in my Services. I did find GWX.exe in Details in Task Manager and did end task there also, but I had already done the reboot before I checked there and Win10 Upgrade is not showing in Windows Updates. It says there are no updates available.
I will check in msconfig after the next reboot and see if it is there. Thanks!

OK let's back up. When I posted this thread I was not trying to remove the Get Windows 10' notification. I was trying to stop Win10 from forcing me to upgrade because it was showing in Windows Update and I could not do any updates without Win10 starting to download. That led to the suggestions here that GWX might be the problem.

Eldon in your post #18 you said "You can stop a process in Task Manager but, you'll have to end the service in Services." So I guess I misunderstood what you meant.
Anyway that is why I looked there and as I stated it was not in Services but was in Processes and in Details as GWX.exe in Task Manager. I disabled both of those and I have not uninstalled updates. Anyway right now Win10 is not trying to install it's self in Windows Updates like it was which is good. Even after a reboot it is not showing there, at least for now.
So unless it comes back and tries to force the Win10 Upgrade I OK and I do not mind the little reminder popping up from time to time as it is only mildly annoying.
If the forced upgrade comes back I will repost.
    Thanks!

    katkat...

I have been through this with 4 Windows 7 PCs now, and Earthling's list (post 12) is the only way that I have found to get rid of the pop up for keeps. Essentially, you go through all you installed updates and right click to remove any you find on Earthling's list. Make sure you change the updates setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". Then manually connect to updates again, find any on the list, and right click on each one and select hide update...

While you are at it, I recommend taking a look at this information about information gathering updates that have recently been pushed on Windows 7 users and Windows 8.1 users. I think Earthling hit on most of the ones that were associated with the Windows 10 upgrade, but there may have been others. The info is helpful to be familiar with anyway:

    http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...s-kb-3068708-3022345-3075249-and-3080149.html

Here is some more good information:

    http://techne.alaya.net/?p=12499

There is also a way to shut off the Windows Customer Experience, which gathers telemetry from users, inside Task Scheduler. The last link above caught me off guard when it comes to this practice.

I think Microsoft has really gone too far with their "intelligence" gathering...

    katkat,
As I understand it, GWX is responsible for Windows 10 trying to download/install.

FYI I have Windows Update disabled since day 1 - that's why I don't have these kind of issues.
