    HP notebook 15-ac157cl
Touch Notebook, Intel Core i5-5200U,8GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive
    Windows 10
Processor Type: 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5200U Processor
    Processor Speed: 2.2GHz
    Cache: 3MB
    Memory (RAM): 8GB PC3 DDR3L SDRAM (1-DIMM)

I was having NO issues, but after a Windows 10 Update I got a blue screen asking to choose a keyboard. That's been hours ago and I can't remember exactly what happened but after trying many options including reset, roll back. At one point I chose to roll back to previous version (thinking it was like a restore point). When powered up it comes to the Windows log in, but it does not recognize my password!! I tried "forgot my password" but it displays --
"Windows couldn't connect to the ProfSvc service. Please consult your system administrator"
Possibly because it is not connected to the internet. I can see the icon for internet in the bottom right had corner of the log in screen, but the only option there is to turn airplane mode on or off.
In the blue screen i had tried all 3 options
    1.) Previous Version
    2.) Windows 10
    3.) Windows 10

    But to no avail..

Ive tried booting into safe mode by tapping F8, but it just goes directly to the Windows log in window...

    Please Help!

I am having the same problem, except i had a password assigned, Windows update came through, and then I got the dreaded "Choose a keyboard" and I have been in purgatory ever since. How can I do a system restore without logging into windows? ---- Never mind --- I cannot get to command prompt. It brings up my account, the only account, and needs a password to continue.

When I click on ease of access it doesn't give me an option for command prompt only narrator, magnifier, on-screen keyboard, high contrast sticky keys, and filter keys . I don't have a Hotmail account. I do have a Windows Live account I have the correct password for that account. but when I get to the login screen the internet is not connected. I can see the internet icon in the bottom right-hand corner . when I click on the internet icon the only option gives me to put airplane mode. :/ I have listed my problems in the software forum with all the details but have not seen any responses yet. :/

Of course I would rather not delete all my data and programs.... :( i do have a Microsoft Account and have the password, but it is not letting me sign in.. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but The computer is not connected to the internet. ... The computer was working fine with no issues, and I have had the same local windows password for over 2 years. Only after the update did it go nutso... :/

I know this requires a lot of patience on your part... i have used MG for years, and you guys have helped me save a lot of systems...

I did get to the window---
"Reset this PC choose an account to continue
There is only one account, I chose "Forgot your password or don't see your account?"
    This is the message:
"This list only shows admin acct that have previously signed into this PC, and does not include standard user or domain accts. You need to be signed in as an admin to use some repair and restore tools. If you don't have a password for any of these accounts, you can restart to try signing in to Windows to manage your user accounts." with an option only to RESTAR

I have tried to enter my Microsoft Live password, my regular password but never takes it and never gives me an opportunity to reset it.

    It says-
    Hi, Becky Lou

Enter the password for this account ---
and it does not take any of my attempts

When I choose forgot password at the Windows Sign in Screen, it ways
This is exactly what has happened to me.. I am still in purgatory... Did you ever resolve it?

I tried going back to the previous version, and that's how I finally got to the Windows Log In screen. But it won't take my pw.
I have read through the link you listed above. I think it may be a little over my head... :/
I have googled and tried several things... I have had not luck. They system has decided it will not take my password, that I have had for 2 years. I had used my Windows Live connection at one time, but it was driving me CRAZY!! This system is listed on my Windows live account.....

Ok...at the log in screen, hold down the shift key and hit the power button on the bottom of the screen. When you get the advanced screen, click on command prompt and enter these commands:
    "net user Administrator /active:yes".
    Hit Enter.

    I followed these steps
    1. Turn on your PC and wait until the Windows login screen shows up.
    2. As soon as it appears, press Restart button (clicked power button > restart)
    3. After that, select Troubleshoot and click Advanced Options.
    4. Opt for Startup Settings and press F4 to open Safe Mode
    5. Then wait until your PC restarts and boots into Safe Mode.(It didn't appear to be in safe mode. Just back to the Windows Log in screen)
    6. Wait until your computer loads and then press Windows key and press R at once.
I could not get past this point.. :/

@beckylousiana - you are learning the hard way about the consequences of not taking steps to protect yourself from problems such as this one. If you had been using disk imaging on a regular basis all this pain would have been over in well under half an hour. A disk image is a compressed but complete snapshot of your OS disk or partitions which can be used at any time to restore your computer to the exact state it was in when the image was created. With Win 10 issuing major updates twice a year it is ever more advisable to protect your system in this way and relying on Windows' built in recovery tools is insufficient.

There are many very capable programs for this, both free and paid, and for newcomers I would recommend Aomei Backupper simply because its user interface is the easiest to use. Apart from the software you also need a storage medium for the image files, for which an external drive is ideal.

I cannot figure out to boot into safe mode.
In the Blue Screen - Choose an Option > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > restart > (F4).enable safe mode
Computer restarts and opens to Windows Log In Screen -- to which it dues not recognize the pw --

    - it will not let me Reset the PC without the password

I did just discovered Recovery Manager and it appears i may be able will be trying to at least back up some files.. .

Still searching for answers. Just talked to a very knowledgeable friend that works on computers, and he says that is very unusual. He gave me 2 passwords to try
    adminmin & password.. they didn't work :/

This is exactly the issue, to the word, that we are experiencing following the update to my husband's Lenovo Yoga. I've been "Googling" like crazy and I haven't yet found anyone who actually had the same problem and figured out a fix. There are many people offering solutions, but none work - although I'm willing to try everything suggested!

I can't follow the complete directions provided by Microsoft & Avast because I can't make the command prompt appear to do try the in place upgrade (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...a-choose/8ff0d933-8819-4945-9f0c-17ac854400e2). Here's what I have been able to do, but now I don't know what to do:
    1. following directions for method 2, I created a USB drive with the "installation media for another PC"
    2. At the Choose An Option screen on the miserable laptop I chose "Use a device"
    3. On the next screen I chose EFI USB Device
    4. It then gets my USB blinking and pops up a window saying "It looks like you started an upgraded and booted from installation media. if you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. if you want to perform a clean installation instead click NO."
    5. Choosing No gets me to a Windows popup asking for language, time & currency, & keyboard method. I clicked Next and the next window shows "Install now." Repair your computer is an option at the bottom, but it just goes to those wonderful options that we've all been seeing that don't work.
    6. I pressed Install Now
    7. Soooo, here the question. It's showing a window asking where I want to install windows. There are a bunch of Drive 0 Partition options but I'm afraid to click anything. I've attached a photo of this, but I also have photos for every other step if needed.

Take the highlighted option - it's the only partition big enough to install Win 10 on.

Fabulous. We got all the way installed and then it wanted the Windows username & password. Because of the nightmare with it not taking the password post update, we spent some time re-creating another password on another computer. We got back to the setup of the rest of the installation and the screen is now all black. I can see the cursor and open the notifications screen but everything else is black. The USB drive is still pulsing like it's doing something, or thinking about it, but otherwise nada.

I'm sorry - I can't see a way to edit my previous post. I finally pulled the power cord and held the power button and somehow it restarted back to the setup questions. Miraculously, it worked! We're up and running. I do have a step-by-step of what I did to get here since following the actual methods given by Avast & Microsoft did NOT work due to my available options not matching what they expected me to see. If you're interested in the process I took let me know. I don't want to waste your time otherwise. :)

Let me start by saying that beckylousiana's post that list out the options available to many of us affected by the bad Windows 10 update are exactly those that I encountered with my husband's laptop. There are two methods to fix this update problem that are recommended by Avast and Microsoft: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...a-choose/8ff0d933-8819-4945-9f0c-17ac854400e2. The first tells you to do a rollback, the second suggests an in-place upgrade. Both stink if you can't reach the command prompt, which I couldn't because I was only offered the suggestion of logging into my account which wouldn't accept the password, despite the fact that it was correct.
Now the steps that I followed that ultimately end up working (yay!). I started using their steps until they didn't work anymore.

From "them" - To restore your system, you will need:
    • A blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of disk space
    • Another working Windows PC that you can use briefly (for example, a 2nd computer in your home, a friend’s computer, or one at a library or print shop)
    1. On a working PC, go to the Microsoft software download website.
    2. Download the media creation tool and then run it. (be sure to format the USB drive first or this will fail, and be prepared for this to take awhile)
    3. Select Create installation media for another PC.
    4. Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit). (if you have a newer laptop it's probably 64 bit)
    5. Follow the steps to create installation media on your USB drive, and then select Finish.
    6. Now from here on out this is what I did: Get your wrecked laptop to the Choose An Option screen then choose "Use a device"
    7. On the next screen I chose EFI USB Device
    8. It then got my USB blinking and popped up a window saying "It looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media. if you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. if you want to perform a clean installation instead click NO."
    9. I chose No and it got me to a Windows popup asking for language, time & currency, & keyboard method. I clicked Next and the next window showed "Install now." Repair your computer is an option at the bottom, but it just goes to those wonderful options that we've all been seeing that don't work so don't bother pressing that.
    10. I pressed Install Now and it wanted to know where to install. I chose the first, highlighted, partition option.
    11. At this point it started rolling. I may have had something asking if I wanted to overwrite or upgrade or something. There was an option to either upgrade or to do a custom installation. I THINK I did the custom installation. All files were saved to OneDrive in the first place, so we weren't worried about losing stuff.
    12. Be ready with a new Windows password. We went to a functioning computer and did the "forgot password" link for Windows so that we would be confident that we were using the right password.
    13. After installation Cortana appeared with her slew of questions and at this point you will need to log into Windows. This is where it pays to be ready with the password because we ran out to get a new one and then the computer went black aside from the pointer. I had to pull the power plug while holding the power button to totally shut down (just holding the button until shut down still produced the same black screen upon startup). After the "real" power down it returned back to Cortana when it restarted.
I may be a little off on those bottom 4 or so steps, but basically you are using your flash drive to install Windows again. You'll be wiping everything but at least it gets working again. To be honest, I was very surprised that using the USB actually worked.

This thread will help a lot of people down the road! :) So happy about everyone pitching in with similar issues and solutions. That's why I LOVE Major Geeks!

I have a few helpful tips I noticed others were having issues with, referring back to previous post #'s when applicable:

#28 I gained access to all of my data and was able to back it all up to DVD and my other latop, with Windows 7 reads every single file perfectly. I saved all my pictures, music etc with these steps
    1. at Windows login screen hold SHIFT key left click POWER then choose restart
    2. CHOOSE AN OPTION screen > Troubleshoot > Recovery Tool > File Backup > User Selection > Windows C > Users > (Your User Name) then you can choose which folders or subfolders you want to back up . I chose No Compression and it worked great for me. It will give you the size of the backup before each start. I chose to do several different backups - Music, Pictures, Documents etc etc.

#16 I was finally able to get to Command prompt without needing a password on a different route ( but not in safe mode)
    1. at Windows login screen hold SHIFT key left click POWER then choose restart
    2. CHOOSE AN OPTION screen > Troubleshoot > Recovery Tool > Run Computer Checkup > Command Prompt ( You can also launch Check Disk for Windows Partition or Recovery Partition from this window.
#20 -Some of the instructions in some of the links state "safe mode" I have asked if I could use Command Prompt to boot into safe mode, but never found the answer.

With all this new information, and if there are no further suggestions....I will continue my quest (After backing up everything and feeling safe to proceed) by trying KKRush tip #30 for an in place upgrade
    ....if that fails
I plan to purchase a thumb-drive large enough, and try KKRush solution #40

I will post an update.... Wish me LUCK!
