Just received notification that Windows 10 is being offered as a free upgrade. I know little to nothing about 10 so I'm not going to get it without some input from the MG community.

    In a nutshell...

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 SP1 and 8.1 users for a period of 1 year after it's official release.
They will also receive free updates until end of support for Windows 10.

I just received the same notification today. It told me to reserve my download copy and when it becomes available it will be in my windows updates.

I was straight onto that little icon this morning LOL "what the hell is that?!" style....

I'm not touching it with a barge pole personally. It looks horrible. I LOVE Windows 7

I didn't get one in mine. :( I will probably upgrade. I'm wondering why my machine would be considered incompatible since it's Win 8.1.

    Okay...I got the icon.

If anyone finds this and did not get it and wants to force it, I found this:

Hope this doesn't mean upgrading is the only option. I've always done a clean install with a new OS.

The icon hasn't appeared here yet (UK)

I certainly won't be rushing into it. We have one 8.1 and two 7s in regular use and 12 months to decide on the best way of dealing with it. From what I've seen in the 10TP there's little to be gained so no need to rush.

Perhaps I won't install Win 10. Seems to be way over my paygrade and love Win 7 a lot. We have up to a year to install it for free so no hurry. I've got only 1 PC so if something happens to it while installing Win 10, I'd be royally p*ssed off.

PS: I did hide all those updates pertaining to Win 10 so I don't get notifications.

    And, "HOLY MILESTONE, BATMAN!"

    Congrats on "Thanks" #4,000!!!

Since this is an upgrade, I highly doubt that MS would invalidate your W7 key. That would be simply stupid. My plan is to dual boot using a fresh W7 install for the upgrade on a separate drive in my desktop. I don't think hey've said OEM copies on a custom rig are not eligible, but I don't see it in my System Tray yet. And I saw the icon last night on a refurb I was updating. It's still there...

I ran CPU-Z as this article spelled out what is needed to run 10
    http://www.zdnet.com/article/get-your-pc-ready-for-windows-10/

I've tested three of our 4 Win 7 computers so far and only one has the necessary things to even consider an upgrade. I suspect the last one will fail too.

So maybe around June of 2016, I'll decide if I want to give up my 7 netbook and try 10.
I too like 7 and have no problem running it until support ends in 2020.

I opted in. Though I may also buy the retail version for future hardware upgrades. I'm guessing this license is just an upgrade license and not OEM or Retail. Though, I've read that it may be possible to do a complete format and install.

Yeah, they've dispensed with the crank handle too ;)

TBH, if your computer has an inbuilt floppy drive it isn't going to run Win 10, but anyway you can always buy a plug-in FD if you really have to have one.

I got my "Get Widows 10" icon today. Upon "checking" my reservation, I found that it's a 3GB download so, I'm presuming it's a full install and hoping it's an ISO I can burn to DVD. At least we now have an official release date of July 29th.

I wouldn't want to discourage you from trying to move him on plodr but here's what it actually says -

Floppy drive support. If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver from Windows Update or from the hardware maker’s web site to use it with Windows 10.

So it's just no inbuilt drivers.

Got an odd situation here. The icon appeared yesterday on my main W7 PC so I hid it, and now it's disappeared entirely :confused All the checks confirm the PC qualifies and has the necessary updates. It's OK on my 8.1 laptop and the OH's W7.

And a note, this windows 10 upgrade does not include Enterprise or domain joined OS's. Which I'm happy to learn, though I was going into a panic attack when I thought that certain users were granted windows update rights, and they would see the icon. Nope, not anymore. heh.

I don't think this has been asked, and I haven't seen it.

Does anyone know if installing the Windows 10 upgrade will delete the 'Restore to Factory' partition on OEM laptops. Yes, I have a back up and I know I should back it up before I install anything like this upgrade, but I am wondering about that recovery partition the manufacturer installs.

That's nailed it! Thanks Adrynalyne :cool

@LauraR - previous OS upgrades haven't touched any partition other than the Windows partition and I would fully expect this to be the same.

Re: Windows 10 Update icon: Serious consideration

Afternoon Laura. Agreed with Earthling, and that's what I would think also. However, it's a very valid question, one that I don't think has been adequately answered in any of the MS posts I've been reading. For example: in this MS forum thread one moderator pretty much skips the answer with "Those questions/procedures are not yet set in stone".

Interesting read here about the new Win10 compact footprint solutions: Windows blog.

I'll holler if I turn up any additional info - interested in hearing other MG inputs.

Remote desktop host, bitlocker encryption, group policies, hyper-v, domain support are all important to me. What isn't mentioned here is that Pro in Windows 10 will have full control over Windows Update. Standard will not.

In addition, Pro supports two CPUs, and standard is only one.

IMHO The Win 10 Home users will be BETA testers of updates because the updates will be installed whether wanted or not while business can defer them (meaning that faulty updates in the Win 10 Home will/can be corrected prior to offer them to businesses if businesses opt to defer the updates.

Re: Windows 10 Update icon: Serious consideration

@oma - your concern about OEM systems not being able to revert after the upgrade is misplaced. I've just completed upgrading an unused Lenovo laptop from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro TP and the option to revert to the previous operating system is there. I would post a screenshot except that the snipping tool has disappeared and atm I can't find an acceptable alternative in the beta Store rolleyes

Looks like quite a learner curve here - perhaps more than 7 to 8.

Re: Windows 10 Update icon: Serious consideration

It's just partly my concern due to other users who may have OEM systems. Not all is cleared up by Microsoft what is exactly in store for everyone. On a personal note, when I ordered my PC, Win 7 Home Premium from Dell in Dec 2011 I had problems the 2nd day after it was set up. I called and the next day a technician came in and did put a new motherboard in my PC. Now, due to me being an old noob with serious health problems and having only 1 PC I'm not installing Win 10. Got enough on my mind with using Win 7.

Frankly I've got no idea what you're talking about. Adry, care to explain in noob talk what you're saying? ;)

Re: Windows 10 Update icon: Serious consideration

Windows Insiders (beta testers) will still be around long after Windows 10 launch day. They will be testing things before those who are using release versions get it. The whole thing with Windows Update isn't going to be much different anyway. Every time I've seen an average consumer setup a new PC, they choose express settings, which sets it up to automatically install updates. If they lock it down right, it will prevent malware from shutting that feature off, which is a very common tactic.

For Pro and higher, it is expected business users will be using it and they will need more control for obvious reasons.

This part is why I upgraded to Pro. I read each and every security update and every other update before I patch on my computer. I'm quite thorough on this, on every program I own. I do the same on the server side at work. Also, I don't patch straight away.

    I want control.

I feel the same way theefool! When I decide to buy a Win 10 computer, I will be sure it is running the Pro version. The peace of mind and control over updates will be worth the $$$ to me. The way MS breaks systems by occasionally offering broken updates just isn't worth my time trying to fix a broken computer.
