As you probably already know, mainstream support has already ended, i.e. they aren't going to muck about with it anymore, which is good news. But they do promise to help keep you safe with security updates for three more years yet so no rush. It's up to you. If you don't like change then you may as well stay with what you know, as Win 10, clever as it is, won't change the way you use your computer much and may give you problems you don't have right now. OTOH it's still possible to upgrade for free at present - that might not always be so.

Thank you very much. Did not want to rust to judgement on this. I like Win8.1 so go going to stay. I get updates automatically Have a good day, morning evening or wherever you located. I live in Oakland, Md. Garrett County. It is 4:30 pm here cold, wind blowing calling for snow/rain. Take care.

    Navyvet,
Smart question! And Earthling has given you good advice and things to consider. I'm not here to modify what he says, but in a way, to agree with you. We have 3 computer areas set up here at the moment. My wife's, one for the grandkids/ god kids, friends of theirs and mine. I have 3 or 4 systems beside my work/play area that I fiddle with at any time. Right now I'm using a system that's expandable like crazy and has '7 on it.The 2 others have '10. Different than '7 but close to 8.1. The users have no idea which is on there. As long as their game plays and the dvd from the Walmart bin plays that disney movie and music can flow thru the speakers they are not going to even worry about remembering a number like 8 or 10 or 7.5 or who cares!

I agree with you in that the 8.1 I have (offline right now) is my favorite. It worked pretty much right out of the box and I never had any problems out of it. I will never upgrade it. If push comes to shove, I'll use it offline as my entertainment center. It is great for my offline activities. Light games, music movies and video, making pdf photo albums and screensavers for the rest of the family and such as that.

I have been able to get an upgraded pc with a new '10 installed ready to fulfill these same uses for as little as $99. Local donation centers and small town pc repair shops in this 3-county area have plenty of product it seems.

    Good day and Happy PC'ing

Windows 8.1 will get patches through January 10, 2023. You have 3 more years of security fixes.
You are in your mid 80's, I think, and learning a new version of Windows is not as easy as it was when you were in your 60's.
Stick with it for another 3 years.

I have people I help with their computer. He turns 88 in Feb. and she turns 90 later this year. I am having them stick with Windows 7. He has enough trouble right now trying to undo some change he made in Office 2010.
Since I don't run Office 2010, I have to do some research before I go over and try to "fix" or undo whatever change he made.
