Hi I have a friends computer that I am trying to update using Ms update site but he doesn't have a network card so I am unable to connect it though my LAN and getting updates from MS using dialup takes forever. Is there any way I can retreive the updates I need for his machine from one of my pc's that have a faster connection burn them to a disk and update his machine?

    His os: win 2k professional
    cpu:Intel pentium 2

so I tried to connect the win2k machine up through my cable modem via usb and I get the found new hardware wizard asking for the appropiate driver but it can't find it. I tried going to the modems website to get the driver it needed but I can't seem to find it, is there another way around this?

do you have CD for your cable modem?
    What brand?
Consult with your cable operator to give you the CD.

Yes I have the cd and I installed the drivers from the cd, when the usb is plugged into the modem I can see the Lan in network connections but I am unable to access the internet. Is there something I have to configure to get this to work?

Ok,so far so good. Now,I think the problem is that you don't have config your internet connection, via Network connection.Use the "Create a new connection wizard"And Ask your internet porovider for user name and password, then create one.

I tired to use the Network/ Dial-Up connection wizard in win2k but it's not letting me setup the type of connection I want.
    This is all I get:

It's amazing how something so small can turn into something so big all I want to do is hookup through a faster connection didn't think it would be this big of a problem lol I seen on the connection wizard it gives the option to hookup using a parralell port, would it be easier to go that route?

Can you ask your internet provider to tell you what is the reqiurements(How To) for using the internet connection.BTW, on network connection wizard don't check"connect using phone line",check the other one"connect using LAN"

There is no place in the connection wizard that I see where I can connect though LAN. As for talking to my Isp I will do that tommorow. Is there any way that I can download the updates I need from my win xp machine already connected to the fast connection burn them to a disk and install them on the win2k machine? I tried using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer but I am having the same problem in having to update the update catalog to tell me what updates are missing, it seems like it will take just as long as if I were to go directly to the MS update site and get them directly from there. Theres gotta be a way to update a machine manually without having to connect to the internet.
    Any suggestions?

because he is old and all he uses the internet for is to check email and he gets 10 hrs free a month for dialup and thats really all he needs. btw I found a solution not the best I'm sure but this is what I did. Went to windows update site got the list of critical updates then took a visit over to the MS site and downloaded each update one by one. Kind of a pain in the butt and takes a little bit of time but oh well it works

thx for all the help even tho I wasn't able to get it working I still learned a few new things along the way.
