    Hi there

I'm having trouble installing windows 2000 on an old machine (AMD Duron 700mhz, 192MB SDR Ram). I started off reformatting the hard drive, but when I try the installation, each time I get to a certain point (I get as far as correcting the time settings, keyboard region etc and it starts copying files), the computer just shuts down and starts the whole installation process from scratch. I've tried formatting the hard drive using both NTFS and FAT, but it still keeps doing it.

It's driving me nuts! Previously the machine was running Windows 98 SE perfectly happily. Anyone know what's might be wrong?

    Thanks guys.

Test your memory it may be bad or the CPU could be bad. I would start with the memory.

    Memtest86+

Could you tell us there is any error message on screen? Or it suddently shut down.

No error message. It's as if someone's pulled the plug and the computer restarts.

Another user has suggested testing the memory. How do I do that? I did take out one of the two sticks of memory in case it was faulty and then tried it, but the same thing happened...

    Thanks

Because Your computer is Used for long time, so I only suggest you clean the computer first, cleaning all pins of ram and slot ram, check PSU's Volt is Stable or it can be down but not under 11v7x, checking t* of CPU if You can not touch because it is over heat. Cleaning CPU heatsink, computer will be restart by overheat.

OK, so I've run Memtest and it doesn't seem like the memory is bad. Any other suggestions? (I perhaps should have made clear that when I try and load Windows 2000, it always crashes at exactly the same point when it starts copying files.)

The CD itself could be corrupt.

Possibly, but I don't think so. I used it to install W2000 on another computer pretty recently. And it seems odd to me that a corrupt CD should cause the computer to shut down. Surely I'd just get some sort of error message...

Any thoughts? You suggested the CPU might be bad. Is there any way of testing it?

You can put the CPU in another computer. If you have one available that supports your CPU. Open up the case, clean all the dust out with compressed air. Pull the boards and clean all the expansion slots, pull and reseat your CPU, Heatsink and fans.

Paying attention to the core of CPU If it has a little broken at corner or not, AMD CPU easily get overheat or unstable running and dead if the core is broken, testing your CPU with another mainboard.

Or you could try using a different cdrom drive altogether....
