OK I just installed win2k trying to dual boot and I have 3 problems, ones really hard to explain but i'll explain the other 2.

    1. How do you disable devices? It's supposed to be in device manager, right click isn't it?

    2. How do you reinstall win2k? I accedently deleted all my shortcuts in my start menu...

The other problem involves dualbooting win98 and partitioning. If anyone here has msn and could help me add me leaderdonkey@hotmail.com. Thanks!

1= yes.. but you have to be admin

2= don't waste your time on that.. just make new ones..

Those shortcuts might still be in your Recycle Bin, if so just restore them.

Ok now all im having touble with is to get 2k to dual boot with 98. I edited the boot.ini file and now i have the Windows 98 option but it cant find the boot files or something?

You don't have to edit the boot.ini file if you installed Win2k after installing Win98.

    Please specify:
    1. What partitions you have in your system (Primary and Extended)
    2. Which parition(s) you have Win98 and Win2k installed.
    3. The contents of your boot.ini

If you like to experiment without any help, then this utility might push you in the right direction:

Ok, this is cool. Well now I'm useing my 10gb hd now, and I merged the partitions on my 40gb... Anyway, I have Windows2k on my 40gb and Windows98se on my 10gb. When I boot and select Windows 98 I get the following error:

Windows 2000 could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows 2000(TM) documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

The contents of my Windows 2000 Boot.ini file is:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Windows 98" /fastdetect

    I added the:

    multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Windows 98" /fastdetect

part myself. And it should work cause Windows2k is detecting windows 98 in the startup recovery os default thingy as well... and... o yea, i know win98 works cause if i boot from my d drive (my 10gb) then windows 98 loads and also says it can boot 2k which doesn't work eather as I get an error saying some file is missing (n something).

Haha sorry for the majorly long post, heh.

Oh yea in case you diden't get that my problem is Windows 98 gets that error, and won't boot unless I boto from my d drive which I don't wanna do cause then I can't boot windwos 2000, and, yea.

How do you select to boot the Win98 ? (Have a feeling you are using your BIOS "bootmanager" to select the 10 GB HDD)

As far as I know Win98 will only work if it is boot files are placed on a primary partition on the master HDD on the primary IDE channel.

A solution would be to create another primary partition on your 40 GByte and then move the files from your 10 GByte to this new partition. Then play around with fdisk and SYS to make the new primary partition bootable. Then use the utility I gave you before to add the new primary partition to the Win2k bootmanager.

Ug is they're no way to boot 98 off another drive?!?!!? And yea to boot Win98 I go into my BIOS and swich it to boot from the d drive. And actually I got this boot manager called OSL 2000 from majorgeeks and it lets me boot from my c drive and go into win98 but then win98 gets all ****ed up, i mean it works, but it doesn't see my 40gb drive and says its having errors with the hd drivers.

  10. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

    Not that I know of.

Sounds like a way I haven't heard of.

This could be caused by your 40 GByte being formatted as NTFS (Win2k will use the format by default as it is larger than 32 GByte). Win98 doesn't support NTFS natively, but you can get an NTFS driver so you can access the files.

Nope, both drives are fat32 *sigh*. Any other ideas? If no one can think of anything I'm just gonna remove win98 from the startup list and just swich which drive im booting from to dual boot.

    Now i get the error:

"Windows 2000 could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupted:

    <system root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe"

I already replaced this file with a good one so... ugg, help?

I recall getting this error when my boot.ini had become corrupted (By me modifying it). You could try to boot from the Win2k Install Cd and enter the recovery console and perform the command fixboot. (Make sure it is the Win2k hdd you perform the command upon)

  14. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

    kick ass! lemmie try it.

  15. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Dam tried it, it said it repaired it or whatever, still get the same error, dam! Any other ideas?

  16. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

You try to fiddle with the boot.ini and make sure the entry for the Win2k actually points to the right disk and the right partition.

If this fails, then I'm afraid your left with the options of:
    1. Do a repair install on top of the Win2k-install using the Install Cd
    2. Do a complete reinstall of Win2k using the Install CD

  17. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Oh, no, windows 2000 starts, I get that file missing error when I try to start windows 98se from the boot menu, that change anything?

  18. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

Ohh thought you had accepted that you can't use the Win2k boot manager to start a Windows 98 installation placed on another hdd.

  19. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Haha, well it's just the boot.ini file has options to change the slave drive and all that, and I finnally got it to say it can boot win98se, but it just chnaged the error, arg. You sure, explain to me what drive win98 can boot on and such, I might be able to get it to work ;)

Well by all means please continue with the experiments. When you find a solution, then I would love to update my homepage with the information of how to get a setup like yours to work.

Your homepage? I've done some other stuff like this before so mayby..

Yep I have stumbled upon so much information about how to configure Windows, that I have to write it down, as I hate to forget:

  23. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

*Sigh* I give up. Ok, question though. How do I get windows 98 to stop displaying a boot menu (windows 98 or windows 2000, select one) when I boot from my win98 drive? I've edited the boot.ini file for win98 and nothing changes! I know to remove the one from 2000 all I need to do is remove the last line, but, yea. After this I wanna tweak the hell outta win2k, and is they're anyway I can put my win98 swapfile on my 40gb drive? or win98 program files on my 40gb? THat way I could play games with both os's as well...

A little puzzled that you have Win2k in the Win98 boot-manager (It can only handle previous DOS versions). It seems you have the Win2k BootManager installed on your Win98 HDD. To disable it then you could try to execute this command when booting into Win98 DOS 7.0 (It should reinstall the Win98 boot files and point the Master Boot Record to them):

    SYS C:

Note you may need to execute the command from a Win98 DOS 7.0 bootable floppy SYS A: C:, but make sure that the C-Drive is your Win98 HDD.

If this doesn't help then check your MSDOS.SYS and make sure the option BootMulti is set to 0

  25. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Yea it has win2k as default as well and when I try to boot it i get the same error as i do when im booting from my c drive. I diden't try that sys c stuff yet but boot multi is set to 1 in my msdos.sys file, what's that mean? Change it to 0?

  26. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

It means the Win98 bootmanager will give the option to boot the previous operating system present on the machine(can only handle older versions of windows or dos), setting to 0 removes this option from the boot manager.

  27. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

So why the **** does it think it can boot windows 2000? lol.

  28. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

I changed it to 0, still shows Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (default)... dammit! Help me :(

  29. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

It seems I have confused you.

The most likely cause of the current behavior is because you have the Win2k Boot Manager installed on the Win98 Partition. (The Sys command)

But I didn't want to rule out the chance that you had been fooled by the Win98 Boot Manager (You have been very non specific about what you experience in all your posts so far, so I try to cover all areas:) ). Therefore I also mentioned how to disable multi booting in the Win98 BootManager. (The BootMulti option)

OOO, hey you said I diden't explain much, what else would you like to know?

  31. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Oh and I'm a little confused about the sys thing. I have a windows 98 boot disk, now what? or can I boot into safe mode command prompt and do it?

  32. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

It was mostly a comment for how the help has been going so far. Have been giving the wrong answers because I made faulty assumption about the information you gave :). But most dark corners have given light after a few posts back and forth. So right now I don't need more information.

Not sure how Windows 98 reacts to the SYS command when inside Windows (Normal or Safemode). I recommend you do the following:
    1. Boot into Command Prompt (Press F8 at bootup to access this option)
    2. Insert the bootable Win98 floppy disk in your floppy drive.
    3. Write the command SYS A: C:

  33. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Wow, it must be the win2k boot manager, it has all the win2k stuff like restore system configuration and such, none work when im booting from this drive but yea...

  34. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

THANK YOU!! Haha. I just rebooted into MSDOS and did it that way yah! now I'll just delete the line from my boot.ini in win2k and then ill just use the bios to dual boot. Cool. Anyway, now I need to tweak up my win2k. Also I wanna see if I can get my win98 swapfile on my 40gb drive instead of my 10gb drive. WOuld make 98 run abit faster. Thanks!
