Windows 7 will not boot up after running Norton Power Eraser. Ran FRST and FIX with help from Malware Removal Forum. However, Windows still does not boot up from the C drive and was advised to post here. Please advise.

    Hi,

What do you see on screen when you boot the computer until it stops?

It doesn't look like your System Reserved partition is set to Active.
Try these commands at the command prompt:

    diskpart
    select disk 0
    select partition 1
    active
    exit

Then reboot without the repair CD.

Thank you for the reply. Some progress. The initial boot only went to a gray screen seconds after powering on. The only options I could get in were BIOS and BOOT options. Could not go into SAFE mode before the gray screen appeared.

After your suggestion, it now goes into a patterned blue screen with "Chooose an Option" which consists of Memory Test and System Test. They passed. But when I restart (or exit from this mode) it goes into this mode again and doesn't start Windows. BTW, this is on a Dell Inspiron laptop. Initially I got a 5013,3 error before running NPE.

I took a picture of the what flashes before going into the Choose Option mode and it says the following:

    Loading DRMK V8.00...
    HIMEM.SYS 8.11
    DRMK version 8.00

    COMMAND.COM Build 37 - Jul28,2008
    DRMK KERNEL Build 15 Aug 8, 2008
    Copyright......

Please advise next steps. Thank you!

We have set the wrong partition active that is the dell diagnostic utility. Go back into diskpart and let me recheck those partitions.

    diskpart
    list partition

You should get a list of three or possibly four partitions what are their numbers and sizes? So something like partition 1 100mb, partition 2 300gb etc.

I think I have the partitions correct but I don't see a standard size boot partition. Your log shows that partition 2 has boot files but that is technically the recovery partition so I don't want to set that active, yet.

In diskpart go ahead and set partition 3 active. (the worst that happens is it doesn't boot.)

    diskpart
    select disc 0
    select partition 3
    active
    exit

Then try to boot without the disc.

    partition 1 primary 101MB 31KB offset
    partition 2 primary 14GB 101MB
    partition 3 primary 581GB 14GB

Go ahead and set partition 2 active and see if it starts Windows normally or gives you recovery options. You don't want to do a Dell recovery so if that comes up exit out of it. We can fix the bootmgr is missing error on partition 3 but perhaps the log is correct and Dell combines the recovery and boot partitions.

    diskpart
    select disc 0
    select partition 2
    active
    exit

Windows started and wanted to know if I wanted to repair startup or start normally. I chose normally and when it rebooted it started repair automatically. It is now attempting repairs. Will let you know when it completes.

Yay, Windows booted and started. The startup repair found a corrupt driver (smr300.sys) and repaired it. Haven't gone through the programs yet but looks promising. Thank you so much!!!!

Assume that I could leave it as is in partition 2.

    Now, thisisu shows up! ;)

Yes, it looks like partition 2 had the boot files all the time. It was labeled recovery which usually doesn't contain the Windows boot files hence my reluctance. But the boot files are there and it should be the active partition so you are good.

Since TimW made some malware related change, I would create a fresh Restore Point so you have a known good one should you need one unrelated to this problem. You can just type create restore in the Start/Search box to open the window. Hit the Create button and choose a name for the restore point.

Help, Windows 7 64 freezes upon restart

Hi. My PC locks up when restarting. Windows starts fine on a cold start but whenever the PC gets restarted, either manually or automatically, it locks up during the Windows startup. The screen locks when the color dots are going around before it forms the Windows flag. Three color circles are on the screen and freezes. Please advise. Thank you.
