I have Windows 7 ultimate/ 32-bit on a Dell Optiplex 170L desktop. I forgot the password and tried many ways to reset the password. I even purchased a password reset software which didn't work.

I am now trying to change the Bios setting.

I opened in safe mode with the command prompt. I entered "net user administration" and opened that file. The password is changeable but I don't know what is the correct command to change the password.

Can you help me out on this?

net user administrator * <----add an asterisk
then it will ask for a new password.

Thank you foogoo for your reply.

Unfortunately it did not work for me. Most likely because I was in safe mode as a guest, not the administrator.

When I pressed f8, after all the windows files were listed, it went to the sign in window. I don't know the password so I had to open the safe mode as guest.

Is there a way I can force it open as the administrator without knowing the password?

last time i had that issue, Trinity Rescue Kit did the job.
    quite magical.
    its a freebee

not sure this is what you meant: but irrespective of safe mode or normal; at the prompt for credentials, hit ctrl/alt/del and you should get a box to pick any of the live UserAccounts to choose login.
if it takes you straight into Guest desktop, just hit the start button and "log off" or "switch user", either one

Thanks Zapp. What you suggested won't work for me. I don't know the Admin. Password to log in that way.

If in the Trinity rescue kit I need to know the password, that won't work either.
If I don't need to know the password for that kit, I'll give it a try. Where can I get it?

The software I bought was "Prosoft Password Recovery 5.0" That didn't work because I didn't have the password. You need the administrator password to install the software.

The URL you just gave me was the same as getting a command prompt in safe mode. The keyboard does not respond when trying to enter a new password.

I'm beginning to believe that the only way is to restore to factory settings. Even there, I would need the password.:(:cry
