In my Christmas gifts I got a Windows 7 disc with all versions
    Windows 7 Starter x86
    Home basic x86
    Home premium x86
    Professional x86
    Enterprise x86
    Ultimate x86
    Windows 7 Home basic x64
    Home premium x64
    Professional x64

I was wondering which would be the best for my laptop
    Toshiba A135 2 GB of ram CPU intel duo @ 1,73 1,73
    Vista home basic 32-bit

It came in a proper Windows case BUT on the back it said,s
Retailer use only and every version has as a different
    Product key

So back to my question which version should I use?

I'm skeptical of the legitimacy of this; I've never heard of such a disc.

Anyway, you apparently have a 32-bit computer since your Vista OS is 32-bit. So, you need to choose one of the x86 versions. Home premium is fine for the majority of users. However, if this disc is legit and you truly can choose which OS, you might simply choose the Professional version since you have no additional cost for any version in this scenario.

MS does not make Windows 7 Starter available. That is strictly an OEM and comes from the netbook manufacturer like ASUS or Acer. So it looks like you have a pirated DVD.

The product key you use might even be black listed.

If you wish to upgrade, I recommend you purchase Windows 7 Home Premium. Your friend meant well but his present will end up being more problem than solution.

That scared me when you said that but, I was able to put Professional x86 on
    my laptop

If this is a pirated DVD they did a really great job on it
It look,s like a store bought disc, just like my XP sp2 with holograms of
    Microsoft right on the disc

plodr you are on the right track where I received this disc from

    No "if's" involved.

Any decent pirate can do that, likely using his pirated Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.

Have you run Windows Update on the install yet? I'll be interested to see the result.

Thank,s for the great insight solaris89
Then it is most likely is a pirated disc

I shut it down at about 4 pm 193 updates
right now it,s at 105 so i,m typing this on my old tower

If I have problems with OS I can always buy a HDD for $30
at the local comp store and put Vista back on

    Thank,s again solaris89
