I just bought Windows 7, professional edition 32 bit, and when I tried to install my motherboard drivers, of course a message popped up saying the drivers on the cd that comes with the motherboard are not Windows 7 compatible.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5K-E, I bought it two years ago. I am currently running Windows XP home edition. After a search on the ASUS website I was able to find the latest BIOS ROM, the Marvel_Yukon Ethernet,, the Raid driver, and some others, all compatible with Windows 7. They are all sitting in my Download folder as .Zip files.

The first driver I tried to install is the P5K-E 1305, the latest available, I extracted the Zip file, and here I have a file with a .ROM extension, and I don't know how to proceed, I have never updated my BIOS before, so I don't know how to deal with the .ROM file. In the .Zip folder there is no .exe file, only the .ROM one. Can anyone help? Besides, I hear that updating of the BIOS may cause damage to it, and make the all system unstable, so, is it a good idea to do it, or should I just get a new motherboard, Windows 7 compatible? Thanks for any suggestions, regards,

    Enrico

    Hi

Yes at times the BIOS and flashing it wrongly can cause the motherboard not to function, but ASUS do have a good application to help you HERE (I use this one always) flash the BIOS easily, so do try it, you may once flashed, may need to pop the motherboard battery out for 10mins to reset CMOS (the BIOS settings) and re-enter any settings needed.

But before trying the BIOS (it may add fuctinality to Windows 7) but install the Chipset driver first then reboot, then install Audio, LAN and reboot, then check Device Manager for any yellow ! marks.

What is your graphic card make and model? as you will need to get lastest Windows 7 driver for that also.

    Hi

I would go with the Chipset driver first and the one from the ASUS support site for your motherboard will do fine, all it does it to allow Windows to correctly identify the onboard hardware components on your motherboard, which in turn allow the drivers for say Audio, USB and LAN etc to install correctly, the Chipset is a core driver, and without it your motherboard wont function to its full potential. You'll be fine with the Chipset.

Leave the BIOS for now as if the Chipset and other drivers all install fine and your PC works ok, the BIOS update may not be needed, its only needed if fuctionality is lost in a component that windows 7 needs.

I wouldn't touch the BIOS unless you really have to which I doubt, just do the chipset etc. That's all I needed to do for my P5Q-Pro which is an older board than yours.

I installed the Marvell_Yukon and the chipset, the other ones not a chance I have a message saying: Mass USB storage device non installed correctly, what do I have to do now? Also the JMB363 driver was not installed, it asks me for a floppy and I don't have one with me, the IM_MSM says my pc does not meet the minimum requirements. What do you suggest?
