Can you load Windows 7 64bit over Vista 32bit Operating system? I have a laptop with 1gig of memory using Vista 32 bit. I wanted to load Windows 7 64bit in it. The problem is that it is my daughter's laptop and it keeps freezing with the Vista OS. I have the Windows 7 64bit from my other computer and I thought if I loaded Windows 7 64 bit that it would make her computer work good again,

I can't afford to buy another Windows 7 Operating disk.

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Hi

Nope sadly you will have to clean install Win7 64bit as upgrade path is not supported going from 32bit to 64bit.

Maybe worth explaining more of the issue with the Vista laptop and maybe we can help fix the freezing issue?

Well, you'd be illegal if you ran your W7X64 copy on her machine and yours, besides the laptop might need specialized drivers from the maker. I would start by trying to find out what's wrong with the laptop if you haven't yet. Changing the OS is not a solution.

I assume it's not under warranty anymore. Have you tried to restore it to factory condition yet? Any warnings in 'Device Manager'?

augiedoggie is quite correct. Installing the copy of win7 x64 from your desktop is illegal as the licence is for 1 machine only.

We will not help with illegal activities but we can help to fix the laptop as it is now.

That should not be necessary. Did anyone ever create a Restore disc from the Recovery partition on the hard drive? Have you tried reinstalling Windows from the Recovery partition?

Does your daughter have important files on the laptop that she would hate to lose?

If you can't restore from the Recovery partition and a recovery disc (DVD) was never burned from the Recovery partition, contact the manufacturer. I recently contacted HP about this for a laptop that's about 3 years old. I learned they could send me a recovery disc for about $15 + tax, regular shipping, or pay extra for faster FedEx shipping.
