    hi, I am using Windows 7 and have a couple of questions. One, if i make changes to my computer, do i need to make a new system repair disc to use for restoring a backup of a system image? And two, is it ok to use your computer while making a backup?

    Hi

    1. Yes you can do as it will allow you to restore your PC to a point that is current, say with all Windows updates to this point in time and with all your installed apps, if you use a default restore disk then you go back to the apps and Windows updates (service pack) at creation of that disk.

    You can use the likes of Acronis True Image 2011 to do this or the Free Easeus ToDo as they both create full images of a HDD that allow a full recovery from (when using the boot up disk that they both have), personally I use Acronis, as I have used it for years, but Easeus ToDo is just as good.

    2. Some imaging apps yes and some no, personally I find it better not to use the PC as its imaging a backup.

    @Halo:
    I think in his first question he was asking if he needed to make a new Windows 7 system repair disk each time he changed something on his computer and then decided to create a new image using the Windows 7 system image backup. I do not think you have to do that but maybe I am wrong. Or maybe I misunderstood the question.

    I guess ppl are assuming from the thread title that you are referring to the backup system that comes with Win 7, but that does not require you to make a system repair disk. So what backup software are you actually using?

    @Earthling:
    If the system is corrupted and is not bootable, you would still need the system repair disk to restore the image that was backed up, correct?

    Personally I would as it would be a current backup over one that was old and not up to date, most OEM PCs come with retore DVD, CDs or a restore HDD partition, this is good but it will only take you back to factory settings, while again good, its loosing your custom settings and installed apps, hence using the likes of Acronis or Easeus.

    The Imaging apps as in Acronis and Easeus will allow you to keep a current image of your HDD and saves having to reinstall everything again to get back to your default or custom install of apps and updates,

    Windows 7 does allow you to create a image/restore dvd, using these instructions HERE, ita good and works but alternates are above,

    @tgell.. I think I answered that in my point 1 and see above as to why,

    If system is corrupt and you have a very current image then booting to the image backup disk and restoring the image if the HDD will restore your PC to normmal use as of the dat eo flast backup, if you have a hardware issue then a software restore from an image file may not help as hardware issues are sometimes terminal.

    Like Halo I normally use Acronis, which does use a system restore disk. However when I tested Win 7 backup, just to see how it compared really, there was no requirement to create a restore disk as you use an installation disk for restoring images. But maybe I'm wrong here, as those with preinstalled Win 7 would still need a means of booting the system in order to restore an image.

    Maybe someone who has a preinstalled system and uses Win 7 backup can clarify this.

    btw, it doesn't compare at all :(

    EDIT - Halo's link does clarify it

    Thank you for all the replies! I have restored my computer using a windows 7 system image before. However I changed my video card and I could not restore an image I had made, so I put the old video card back and did a restore. that worked. now I swapped the video card and made a new system image. I was wondering if I needed a new system repair disc as well.

    The link Halo posted says not, and apparently gives you the option not to ask again. That's consistent with Acronis, where you only need a new rescue disk when using a new build of Acronis. I'm with Halo on this and would recommend a third party imaging program. Then you can have multiple backups without overwriting and restore individual files too, as well as lots more useful features. It's good that MS have finally included imaging capability, but it isn't a great implementation imo.

    Hi

    If you have changed hardware and thus drivers for this new GFX card, then do try the Windows imaging backup again, it should work (never tried it myself after changing HW) as its a new image of the HDD and Windows install.

    But personally as I mentioned an as Earthling also mentions, some of us do prefer 3rd party apps and ToDo is good, Acronis is better but is a paid for app.

    Do let us know your experiences with this ToDo app.

    Yeah, i did try todo and I was able to mount and test the image. I also made a bootable cd, I hope I can use this to restore the image in case of hard drive failure.
