main laptop (gateway) has blue screens STOP0000004E
it says i may have installed something recently hardware or software. no.

-cannot start without pressing f8 and selecting 'disable driver signing enforcement' if not selected ..
automatically starts system repair which does nothing over and over again

a couple weeks ago, reformatted from disc with system recovery, same thing happens.

2nd laptop (HP) is VERY slow at startup
hangs out for a while after typing in password to login, doesnt want to unfreeze to open anything.

has got a bluescreen or two
has also been reformatted from disc, today

    both windows 7 home..

Hi frea and welcome to MG's,
I am by no means knowledgable in dealing with BSoDs,but know enough to help you try to find the culprit of it.......

Can you boot your machines in safemode without them blue screening ?? if so then I would suggest disabling ALL your start up programs/app's like this....

How To Disable Startup Applications In Windows
    Step 1
Click the Start Menu Orb then in the search box Type msconfig and Press Enter or Click the msconfig.exe program link.

    Step 2
From within the System Configuration tool, Click Startup tab and then Uncheck the program boxes that you would like to prevent from starting when Windows starts (uncheck them all). Click OK to save changes when you are done.

    Step 3
Now that you’ve saved changes Restart Windows and the selected programs should no longer automatically start up.

When you restart your machine follow the same instructions as before but select the start up programs/app's one at a time(restarting each time) untill you find the app that is causing your issues, time consuming but it will point you to the app thats the problem, when found just leave it disabled and post back with the result. Some one with a bit more knowledge of these type of issues may then be able to help resolve it with you.

System does run in safe mode. The HP one is now running smoothly. Not even sure what I did. mine blue screens randomly. Not after each every startup. i would have to leave everything off for days at a time to figure it out. There is something I left out, though..If I install windows updates (security) that are 'important.. reccomended' I get Alot more problems. Blue screen after blue screen. I'd go install them updates again but i'm kind of scared??????? Thanks for responding btw

I think that you may have malware/virus infection that is causing these issues, have you tried disabling the start up programs in the way that I instructed, don't worry you cannot damage your machine by doing this as it is totally reversable by just following the same instructions but instead of unchecking the box's check them ;). I strongly advise that you try that fix first before having to go through the malware removal steps, don't worry if you get stuck we are here to help and guide you through ;).

I had some luck and both are up and running smoothly now. For my main computer that wouldnt start normally without system repair coming up, I ran across a TDSS killer, something to do with malware removal.. I read about it for 4 mins and decided to just download it.. after trying other suggestions without any luck. Well It found the virus or whatever it was, removed it, I restarted and everything was fine from then on.. I havent seen a blue screen yet, either. fingers crossed.

I also ran this on my other computer just in case, but nothing was found there. :wave

after installing all of the windows updates ...

had no problems so far. so this thing got rid of what malwarebytes, and SD couldnt

    Hopefully
