Windows 7 boot time fast; logon very slow

    Hey all,

I seem to be having a rather annoying problem with Windows 7 Logon. First it's the black seen then takes an extensive amount of time to get me on to the desktop. Previously there were no issues with this up until recently. I seem to have tracked it down too after windows updates have updated the system. I'm trying to currently track down the issue.

    I have a Core i7-3770k Processor
    16GB DDR3 x2 8GB
    SSD: Intel 300 Series
    + 2 HDDs; Seagate/WD
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H
    Gigabyte GPU: Gts250

I have tired every standard modification possible (throughout the net since this seems to be a general issue). I've scanned for malware through SuperAntiSpyware, Malware Bytes etc Defraged the HDDS. Removed Aero Settings. Msconfig (hide all windows services), checking the shell is correct, checking all HDDs/SSD and even right down to changing the background. I have also updated all possible drivers on the system to the latest release. Performance log shows no errors, however I do get this sometimes:

Disk Busy 608 /sec Disk I/O is more than 500 (read/write) per second on disk 2

Which is a bit of a concern actually due to the r/w speed. This concerns me slightly, but I'm not entirely convinced this is the problem after running diagnostics. Additionally windows operates totally smoothly when in the actual operating system and on the desktop. (Microsoft secretly trying to push windows 8 here? :p )

This is doing my head in with no obvious cause (possibly the SDD). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ? :/

NB: I have tried 2 different windows 7 copies (Computing Students get them at the MSDN)

Greetings, SBOSlayer, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

Be patient - other MGs will jump in shortly. Meanwhile, a few quick questions for groundwork:

    1. Which of the drives listed is your boot drive? Have you tried disabling your normal boot drive and loading Windows on another drive to see if your symptoms change?

    2. If "disk 2" shows in an Error Message have you tried disabling that drive?

    3. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if your symptoms change?

By the way: nice first post - very informative. Kudos.

Thank you for the warm welcome and cheers Caliban :)

1.) I have, with no marked logon performance. On the HDD windows boot is slightly slower, but the logon problem still exists. It might be reasonable to assume both windows copies are faulty. I am downloading another windows copy atm from the MSDN/dreamspark to see if there is any marked improvement.

2.) This drive is my SSD which contains the primary operating system. I did disable it when using the HDD with no difference. The performance states it's busy, which seems to be normal (correct me if i'm wrong, i'd love to learn what's causing this) as the system works fine when in windows and during boot up times.

    3. Went into safe mode, which exhibited no problems. I landed up with access to the desktop in literally seconds with no interruption. Which i'd image would indicate some program is possibly hogging the system? I have read previously some Gigabyte "bumf" can sometimes clog the log on.

Additionally; I have also tired CCleaner recently and Sfc /Scannow; still no avail.

Thank you for the response and I hope to hear from you guys

    Cheers :)

    Good morning.

Excellent. Run or search for msconfig. Under the 'Startup' tab disable anything you deem unnecessary (practically everything on that list can be disabled without affecting Windows, but your antivirus and certain driver programs may be disabled so use common sense). Ok out and reboot the machine into Normal mode. If you note a marked improvement then you can repeat the msconfig procedure and selectively re-enable the Startups until you find the culprit(s).

    Hi,

I had the same exact problem. Im using window 7 64 bit. It was taking my computer a lot longer to bootup than usual. I noticed it was after I started getting the disk busy notice randomly. I installed windows a bunch of times and checked each program to see what was slowing it down.

    It was the Drivers.

    *3g module driver
    *sata ahci driver
    *chipset driver
    *media processor driver
    *vga driver

I think it was the vga driver slowing mine down. if you install these drivers one at a time, then reboot, you will see which driver slows down the bootup process. When you figure out which one it is just stay with the original driver or update to a better one. Also I love using advance systemcare with turbo turned on. Its awesome.

    Hi

I would as above post mentions check the drivers out and especially the chipset for your motherboard and make sure its the latest and re-install if needed. (Check Device Manager for yellow ! marks)

The SSD should be seriously quick in Windows 7 for boot, so the issue is likely other hardware so unhook the HDDs and test or do as mentioned safe boot or msconfig to test startup apps being the issue.

Do also check if your SSD has firmware updates also.
