Windows 7 Fresh install after mobo upgrade- (Win 7 Ultimate x64)

-Installation took about 12 hours, then had no keyboard/mouse response for initial setup (username, etc.)

-After multiple reboots I got the mouse working and completed the initial setup w/ the onscreen keyboard.

-Windows never boots past a black screen with a (responsive) pointer. The pointer will occasionally show the blue "thinking" circle.
-Same result in safe mode, in normal or safe mode I've left this screen up for well over an hour.
-I've never seen the welcome screen or desktop, all the keyboard shortcuts for explorer, start, task manager etc do nothing.

-Recovery options on the install disk finds no errors.

    Now What?

I keep hoping someone else will jump in here because I don't know what is going on.

Win7 install should take less than 1/2 hour. It is generally faster than an XP install used to be.

If you have nothing on the HD that is important (you're doing a clean install) then why not try installing Linux on the HD or XP if you have a disc around. If an install of either of those OS takes a normal amount of time (less than an hour--maximum) then you narrow it down to a problem with compatibility between the components and win7. But you know it is not the hardware itself that is causing the problem.
