I bought my computer 4 months ago with Windows 7 pre-installed on it.

I haven't defragged yet and was wondering if it's necessary with my basic computer use and if the Windows 7 defrag program was reputable.

    Thanks!

Defragging is just a part of keeping the PC running smoothly and clearing out unwanted junk.

I have a defrag program O&Odefrag (not free) that runs all the time in the background to keep everything running properly.

there is also a free edition available.

Another tool is CCleaner (free) that gets rid of junk files and puts the registry in order, you can let it clean all that it finds as it is perfectly safe, if you do it once a week it will stop junk building up in the PC.

could look for Microsoft's writings on the defrag and it's console use, from command prompt...

I like to do mine from Safe Mode, with command prompt.
Vista added a new switch for defragging the boot files, instead of using a third party source to defrag those extra things like registry or pagefile.

The other parts of the operating system and software do not have a chance to start up, allowing all files to become better defragmented; although some or most will say this isn't necessary anymore. I have found I have a longer session defragmenting while in safe mode and from the run command. ; ) just sayin'....

    Hi

The Windows 7 defrag app is much much better than previous versions they had and just run an Analyze Disk to see if it needs defragging, you can just manually defrag, it wont cause harm, but NTFS does not fragment as bad as FAT32.

By default the Windows 7 defragger should be set to automatically check and defrag weekly when idle.

Alot of info on the redesigned defrag on Windows 7 ou didnt want to know HERE but going to get anyways ;)

The idle part got me thinking as my machine is never idle but always near %100 CPU, but apparently nothing needs defragging with the default Wed. scheduled defrag. I just changed it to monthly to see if there's any difference.

windows defrag is every bit as good as XXXX Defrag Program that people keep recommending. there is ZERO difference between Windows 's Defrag and O&O or iobit or Defraggler or any other Defrag/make pc go fast tool

I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I gave the windows 7 defragger a run and when it finished I went to www.pcpitstop.com to have an analysis done and pcpitstop said my drive was 67% fragmented. Is this even possible? Should I just ignore pcpitstop? Thanks for any comments.
