I have a client that has a newer Dell tower with Win 7. When she boots up, everything is fine and no problems exist, but randomly the machine will freeze up and stop responding. The mouse still moves, but I'm unable to do anything else. What's crazy is all it takes is a Ctrl+Alt+Del and the thing comes back to life. It's very odd....I've looked at the event viewer and I noticed that Quickbooks 11 seems to have some errors, but not sure if that is related. This just started a couple weeks ago and is driving her nuts. I thought it was Firefox causing this too, but no luck.

I scanned with Malewarebytes and SuperAntispyware multiple times and found nothing. She had Norton 360 but I uninstalled that thinking it may have been some of the problem.

Any of the experts here have any ideas? I've read through multiple threads that came up on the search, but nothing really hit it on the head.....

I really don't want to have to rebuild this machine.

    thanks!

    Mike

I was reading a thread elsewhere yesterday where it looks close to certain that running an older version of QB was the cause of their similar problems; back up the data and remove QB completely, install the latest version and test.

Or, run QB11 on and older OS (Vista - there may be reverse problems on XP, QB is very tricky/buggy).

There is a newer Version of QB out but not sure if that would help or make it worse.

Have you tried to uninstall QB and see if that is the issue.

I have not uninstalled QB as of today. I was thinking about that last night. I did a system Restore back to a previous date thinking it may have been an update of faulty driver....thought it may help, and it froze up while I was performing the restore as well. I wasn't even in the OS.....I booted from a windows 7 cd. Ctrl+Alt+Del and it came back.......???

I will try the uninstall of QB and try it again, but I think it may be hardware related. I did a diagnostics and everything came out ok.......

Thanks falconattack.....I understand how to uninstall and reinstall the program, but I really think it's something else hardware related. Why would it freeze up during a system restore.....not even in the OS....I booted off a CD.

I'll try to uninstall the program and see if that helps ...

You're thinking hardware? Apparently QB uses drivers - any problem with them would feel a lot like a hardware issue.

Here's the other recent thread I was referring to.

No....I just uninstalled it through the add/remove programs window.....she just added that a week ago and this was causing problems before that....thanks though

Still a good idea to use the Norton Removal tool, you never know when a Norton leftover will bite ;)

So I still haven't figured out why this machine is constantly hanging. I upgraded quickbooks to the latest version and that didn't help. It really seems to be hardware related.
She has to hit the ctrl+alt+del constantly and is very frustrated. I can't even bill her for time on this due to the fact I haven't been able to fix it.
The computer just stops responding (although the mouse moves and you can hit the start button and open a program.....just not use it) and she does the ctrl+alt+del and it comes right back......never seen this before. the event log is F'ing useless.......she is ordering another PC for herself and wants me to just re-image this machine for another user in the office.
