Hi I went to install windows 7 on a pc with XP on but I got as far as when the install finds the drive to install to, it would not go any farther unless I find the drivers for the C drive. I think it means the raid drivers but have not got them can I disable raid to install W7.Hope someone can understand what I mean. I don't understand anything abou Raid.

Sadly, I don't think you will be able to get around this. You will need to provide RAID drivers so that the OS can detect and use the hard drives, even if you do not intend to use a RAID array.

We can help you locate these, but we'd need to know either the make/model of your computer if it is an OEM machine (such as Dell, HP, Gateway, Acer, etc), or if it is not, the make/model of the motherboard.

    Cheers. :)

look for a setting in the bios about changing the raid/sata mode. something like compatible/native/ahci etc. try using all different modes. I think you want the setting that would be similar to compatible.

Windows 7 will install from within windows.
Start up in XP, AND WHEN ALL IS SETTLED, PUT wINDOWS 7 DISC IN AND INSTALL BY FOLLOWING THE PROMPTS- YOU CANNOT UPDATE FRON xp, YOU CAN ONLY INSTALL FRESH, AND w7 FORMATS FOR YOU AND KEEPS xp IN A WINDOWS OLD FOLDER.
If your raid is simply extra drives (d, e ,f ,g ), just disconnect until W7 has installed.
Shut down then reconnect other drives before next restart.
It may pick up the extra drives, if you do not disconnect, and ask you which drive to setup on - C is usually the one.

I thought that as I have not done this with a raid array, I ought to mention after changing bios option to ahci, I had difficulty, the first time in getting W7 installed, so I did it through XP, as I described. and it seemed not to need the sata driver, that way. I have read that altering the bios after installing W7, seems to make life difficult, and the raid may not be seen.
Extra hard drives will be picked up, when installed, but it may be that if running a raid array, that mirrors the drive, you will need advice on that- not my area, I am afraid.

Hi Baklogic I did all you posted before I made my first post I've installed W7 before from within XP and from DVD drive the Raid seems to be on the C drive and wont go any farther without the drivers. The lad who the PC belongs to said he bought it from Tesco no brand name on it. I'll look on the mother board to see what make and model it is and get back to the forum.By the way it is a fresh install not an upgrade.

JMicron controller gave problems when installing raid drivers, I believe when installing Vista, as for some reason it 'lost' the cd drive, half way through the installation.
I cannot remember , at the moment how I got by that - but there was a way.

From the spec of your motherboard it sems to possibly have two 'options,
    2 x SATA 1.5 Gb/s, support RAID 0, 1, JBOD and "Hot Plug" functions 1 x SATAII 3.0 Gb/s connector by JMicron® JMB 360 (PCIE x1 interface), support NCQ,

Have you got the first hard drive connected to the 1.5gb (sata 1) connector?
That might allow windows 7 to see the cd drive while installing from new installtion?
The raid setups shewen in the download explain the different types.
To be honest, I never found any use for raid, other than JBOD, as I usually just run several systems in their own partitions, and using HyperOs, I can copy entire partitions, and replace them in 15 minutes, or, sp (I am lazy)
I also backup any documents in different partitions, so I have no use for raid- My system ahs always been quick enough, and backing up regularly means I don't need to mirror mine, and the extra speed that I read about by running disks as one does not seem enough to convince me,
No doubt anyone using Raid could tell you more about the benifits.
If there was no data to save on the other hard drives, I, personally, would just connect them after installation, and let windows assign them a drive letter- better stil, again, my own way would be to assign them higher drive letters, so that if I connect another hard drive, windows does not give troublE- BUT THAT WILL NOT ANSWER YOUR RAID QUESTION- PERHAPS aSROCK'S DOWNLOAD WILL.:-o
