Ok, I just bought the upgrade to windows 7 cd, and yes, my comp can run it, i've used the thingy that checks your computer for it and its acceptable. I wan to Install Home Premium over Windows Vista Home Basic. When I run it, things go fine, until It gets to the "expanding windows" part. then it gets to 21% says it needs to reboot. And after it reboots, it never starts back up. The screen comes on, and things stay at the Intalling windows screen or back where i can see the 21% and things moving, but nothing ever gets done. I even let it run 5 hours while I slept once. I did notice no red light that tells me things are going, and no movement of the cd in the drive, like it is not reading it. I checked my disc, and it had one scratch on it, but i asked my local comp store and they said it shouldn't bother the install. What can I do?

    Hi

The scratch souldnt be an issue so long as its not deep, but what you may have and this is a PITA with an upgrade, I know and did one a month ago for a relative is that some applications installed can cause the upgrade to fail (had to remove 4 apps before Windows would install), so run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and remove any application its mentiones may not be compatible or update them.

    then try again,

Whoops, forgot to mention that I did that, and still nothing. @_@. i can try the upgrade advisor again and see what it says, but i had done it once and removed a few things before trying again.

    Hi

Yes try it again and one extra thing to try is to uninstall your security applications, but also while I have just remembered it, what Version of Windows Vista did you have as in 32bit or 64bit and what version of Windows 7 is it 32bit or 64bit?

as you need the same xxbit version or a clean install is needed, you cannot upgrade 32bit to 64bit and vice versa.

because it's a CLEAN install. that's why. it formats the drive, including everything on it, then installs windows.

The security applications will be items like Norton, McAfee, AVG, Avast etc depends on which one you use, plus a software Firewall (could come with the likes of Norton Internet Security etc) liek ZoneAlarm, PCTools etc

Also do you have any mounting tools, like Deamon Tools or Nero has one also? if so uninstall.

Look down your add/remove list to find these apps.

Also unplug any external devices like external HDD and Printer etc
