i have a dell xps studio 1800 and it had windows 7 installed on it as an operating system, so i multibooted it with ubuntu l10.04 let and grub booted it up no problem for a while but recently it will just show the splash screen for windows then either go into a blank screen and have nothing happen or get the entire screen covered with horozontal lines with fancy colors and sometimes it make a buzzing noise from the sound system

what are some solutions for this

So you tried the startup repair? If not, do so, but if yes, scroll down.

I would try booting to safe mode. If you can get into safe mode, preferably safe mode with networking, you may need a BIOS update. Also, do you have an ATI video card? Once you answer this I probably can help you.

i am able to boot into safe mode and i think that i have an ati card

do you really think that it just needs a bios update

Could be on the BIOS issue. however, I have an HP running Windows 7 and i have had some startup problems that were directly related to updating the ATI video driver software. I would start there first and see how things go. Then move to the BIOS update.

alright how do i update the video drivers (how do i tell what kind it has before i go out searching for them)

it might be the video card given the fact that it shows weird patterns what it tries to start but doesn't explain why it makes a buzzing noise

just tried booting into safe mode then i get the blue screen of death, now i'm really frustrated i'm starting to doubt windows 7's reputation

I don't see the XPS Studio 1800 listed on Dell's Support site, could you confirm the model details and post the Service Tag please?
